NASHVILLE — A bill that helps Tennesseans get off unemployment and get training and a job is on its way to Gov. Bill Haslam for his consideration.
The House today approved the Tennessee Works Act, sponsored by Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh, D-Ripley, on a bipartisan 91-0 vote.
The Senate bill, approved last week, was sponsored by Sen. Andy Berke, D-Chattanooga.
The bill creates a pilot program to provide employers with grants to pay for training expenses for recently laid-off workers or workers whose jobs have gone overseas.
To continue receiving funds, employers must agree to hire a portion of the employees trained.
