Cleveland High School senior Jarod Rhodes has decided to continue his basketball career nearby at Lee University. He plans to sign the scholarship papers today.
Rhodes averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Blue Raiders, who advanced to the Region 3-AAA quarterfinals this past season before falling to Cookeville.
Cleveland coach Jason McCowan said the Flames are likely to redshirt the 6-foot-2 Rhodes, who will be making a complete transition to the perimeter at Lee.
"He's going to have to," McCowan said. "He's only about 6-2, but he plays about 6-5 or 6-6. The coaching staff at Lee is pretty excited about the opportunity to make him better. He's going to be making the transition, but he works hard and has a mentality that if you tell him to do something, he figures out a way to do it.
"He was voted our most valuable player this season, and he was a guy that brought it every single night."
Born picks Sewanee
Baylor School senior Leo Born has committed to play basketball for the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn. The 6-foot Born was a three-year starter for the Red Raiders.
"Without question he's one of the hardest working players I've had in my 30 years, whether it be practice or a game," Baylor coach Austin Clark said. "It's a real good match. Sewanee is great academically and their team runs a lot of Princeton sets, which will be good for Leo."
Born averaged 14 points, six rebounds and two steals per game this past season to help lead the Red Raiders to the Division II-AA state semifinals.
"He's everything we're looking for as a student-athlete," Sewanee coach Bubba Smith said. "He has great work ethic and his talent is a great fit for us. Plus, we like his character and the fact he's been well-coached and knows how to play the game."
