Wedding Reception

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Bennett is telling the truth for a change. Yea, the true position of the democrat party is support of gay marriage. Kind of confusing though...Obama has stated many times he does not support gay marriage...then Biden said that they did.....then Bennett said that they did.....then Jay Carney said that....What did he say again?...gosh, my head is spinning.

The problem with the democrats is that they want it both ways. With a wink and a nod they say that they support traditional marriage, but ..wink,wink...just wait until our next term and we will change our official position.

If they are so proud of their support of gay marriage, why don't they just go ahead and admit it? That is obvious, they know that the few votes they would gain from gays would be far outnumbered by people who don't support gay marriage. So they just lie about it.

This is typical of Obama..he is a liar of the first order. He makes Nixon and Clinton look like pikers. He will say or do anything to get reelected.

So I am glad ole Clay straightened everything out by admitting that the true Obama/Biden position is to let the gays get hitched.

I think that gays should all get married holding Obama/Biden campaign signs. Maybe Obama can preside over the nuptials hiself on National TV. Can a president marry people like the captain of a ship? Man, would that help his campaign right into the crapper. He can show us all how proud he is of supporting that position.

Now that would assure a Republican victory. No matter how much he lies about it, everyone knows his true position. Even that idiot Bennett.

Focusing on divisive social issues like gay marriage will not help solve the economic problems that are burdening this country. Not only will it not help, it will widen the estrangement between the parties, making conversation on the more important issues more difficult.

Nothing divides America like gods, gays, and guns.

Nothing divides like those who think there is no other way than the one they want. Unless someone is forcing you into a gay marriage, no one is imposing on you. Don't like gay marriage? Then don't participate in a gay marriage. While I have asked before, I have yet to see a reasonable response to the query, "How exactly does gay marriage threaten or harm the sanctity of heterosexual marriage?"

This ga marriage thing is not an important issue. It is the economy stupid and the failures of obastard!

It’s hard to think of a president that has been more of an Epic Failure than President Obama. Even Carter is glad this guy came along, so at least he knows he is no longer the worst president ever. Here is just a short list of Obama’s Failures: Hawaii is in Asia Passing on the keystone pipeline. Touts a Green Energy Company as exemplary that fails a year later. Using the Gulf Oil Spill to promote Green Energy – instead of cleaning it up. Thinking the Tea Party is a passing fad – or that they are racists. Pulling out of Iraq with no clear victory over insurgent forces. Trying to re-write history through speeches – with inaccurate information (i.e. Statue of Liberty) Getting a Nobel Prize for being the most ineffective President in the history of the United States, though some say it was for his pigment. Putting all legislation on the Internet for five days before it comes to a vote. Returning the bust of Churchill to the Brits. Giving a collection of DVDs to the British PM. Denying the notion of American Exceptionalism. Promising to close Gitmo — failing to do so. Securing the Olympics for Chicago in 2016. Naming numerous Communists/Socialists/Progressives to his various Czar positions and then watching them scurry for cover when Beck begins to call them out, forcing them to resign. Government races for NJ, VA and the Senate Seat in Mass. The midterm elections, which Obama himself called a shellacking. Prediction that stimulus would ensure that unemployment doesn’t exceed 8%. Bowing to just about everybody. Proposing amnesty for illegal aliens to increase the population of voters for Democrat elections. He said, I have visited 57 states. Now there is just 1 left to visit. Obama to Medvedev…give me space I will have more flexibility after my election. .

Republicans and political pandering.....

Democrats and political pandering....

I don't like when either side does it. I think Governor Romney has done a lot of this in his mad dash to the right. Does anyone really believe he is as conservative as he has claimed during all the primaries? The man has a long history of promoting liberal policies. People say Obama has no record to run on? Romney's strategy has been to run FROM his record.

None of this protects Obama from the justly deserved criticism of his trying to balance his position on this issue. I would prefer he and Romney say what they truly believe.

Most politicians play politics. I'm going to vote for the person I believe is going to be the greater champion for justice. That can be hard to determine with political shift shapers. But since Romney has changed his form more than play dough at a preschool..... He's got a lot of convincing to do to get my vote.

On this issue, both Romney and Obama realize they need the votes of the bigots to win.

I think this is pathetic all the way around.

The couple being assaulted by the GOP is gay and the issue is marriage, but in reality, the couple in Bennett’s cartoon could be any one of us. The issues might be different, but the GOP is attacking lots of couples these days. Indeed, the GOP’s “contempt” and “assault” list is quite lengthy when you think about it. The characters in Bennett’s cartoon could just as easily be:

A young couple practicing their right of reproductive freedom

A middle class couple receiving disability or unemployment benefits

An elderly couple receiving Social Security Insurance and Medicare

A Buddhist, or Muslim, or Jewish couple practicing the religion of their choice

An agnositc or atheist couple practicing their right not to practice a religion

A poor couple receiving food stamps or Medicaid or financial assistance

Anybody who believes in personal responsibility.

Anybody who thinks the government is too intrusive.

Anybody who disagrees with liberalism (socialism).

Any "bothersome" unborn child.

Do some research, TOES2800. Non-reproductive and homosexual sex is fairly common in nature. The argument that homosexual couples cannot reproduce is moot. The planet is overpopulated.

I agree, Reardon. I can’t find any place in the U.S. Constitution where it says the Republicans or the Democrats or the Libertarians or even members of the U.S. government have the right to pick and choose who members of the American citizenry can and cannot marry.

Indeed, I believe if you give these controlling and dictatorial types of people a political inch they’ll go for a political mile. The next thing you know some of these arrogant self-serving lawmakers and political parties will be claiming they have the right to “arrange marriages” for all of us. Yikes! What a nightmare this would be. I don't even want to think about it.

Clearly, love, marriage, and intimate relationships are personal matter. For members of the religious community who object, they should rejoice and be thankful this issue is a matter of love and not hate - Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. [John 4:8]

Name one nonreligious reason that can be used in a secular court of law to deny marriage equality. No slippery slope syndrome such as : marriage equality will lead to marriage with an amimal (when Bessie-The-Cow can sign a legal document, call Ripley's Believe It Or Not), an immediate family member ( legal next of kin status already established), or a child (legal age of consent already established). Polygamy is a separarte issue. If polygamists want to spend the time, effort, and money to challenge the laws against polgamy, that is their right under the Constitution. Being gay is a choice: irrelevant to the issue. Someone's chosen religious beliefs have no more validity under the Constitution than my (supposedly) chosen orientation or choice in my partner. Forcing churches to marry gay and lesbian couples : the separation of church and state works on both sides of this issue. As far as I know no one has successfully sued the Catholic church to force them to marry divorced couples or non-Catholics. "You can marry someone of the opposite sex." : discriminates on the basis of one of the couples gender (illegal). So, banning marriage equality goes against the First and Fourteenth Amendments, the Full Faith And Credibility Clause, and federal laws against discrimination based on gender. And all state bans will be overturned and nullified if the USSC overturns DOMA and Prop H8.

Ozzy87 said: "Name one nonreligious reason that can be used in a secular court of law to deny marriage equality."

There isn’t any reason, which is why Federal Judge, Vaughn Walker, overturned California’s Proposition 8 on constitutional grounds. Many religious leaders such as Jewish Rabbi Dov Gartenberg at the Temple Beth Shalom in Long Beach, Ca applauded the decision:

I applaud the decision made by Federal Judge, Vaughn Walker, to overturn Proposition 8 on constitutional grounds. He ruled that same-sex marriage violated the 14th Amendment’s rights to equal protection and due process of law. In his decision he quoted precedent: "Fundamental rights may not be submitted to a vote. . . "

Among the facts that the judge established establish with the help of testimony of nationally recognized experts: Same-sex couples are identical to opposite-sex couples in their ability to form successful marital unions and raise children. Though procreation is not a necessary goal of marriage, children of same-sex couples will benefit from the stability provided by marriage, as will the state and society. Domestic partnerships confer a second-class status. The discrimination inherent in that second-class status is harmful to gay men and lesbians.

One statement by Judge Walker was of great interest to me: "Tradition alone, however, cannot form the rational basis for a law." Of course, Judge Walker is referring to religious traditions. The evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox Jewish religious leaders were the strongest supporters of Proposition 8. In the campaign they espoused strong religious and scriptural arguments against same- sex marriage. However, in the trial these same advocates were completely unsuccessful in persuading the judge as to the constitutional basis for prohibiting same sex marriage.

Two years ago I argued from the pulpit that religious arguments could be brought in favor of same sex marriage, but that ultimately the decision about same sex marriage had to be within the framework of the secular authority of the state. The significance of Judge Walker’s decision is that it is the most forceful argument to date that says this issue is a constitutional matter in which religious opinion for or against cannot be relied upon. This is essentially a matter of rights. . . “

Mountainlaurel, your 9:17 am post was spot-on. Toes, your rebuttal was nonsense - just pulling random garbage out of thin air, based on your warped perception of what you THINK liberals are thinking. Practically every one of ML's bullet points is something that has been targeted by Republicans who have tried to limit or completely eradicate said items through legislation.

The Republican party still clings to the laughable notion that it is the party of "family values." But the family values that it clings to are the outdated, never-really-existed values of "Ozzie and Harriet" and "Leave it to Beaver." All the while they flaunt their greed but try to keep secret their own sexual perversions. They have never been good at dealing with shades of grey and if something does not fit into the tidy cagtegory of being Biblical, conservative, capitalistic, heterosexual, miitaristic, or flag-in-your-front-yard patriotic, they fear it and call it evil. Bush pretty much captured the Republican party in a nutshell when he said, "I don't do nuance." Today's Repubs and pretty much all of the radical conservatives and libertarians simply cannot "do nuance." They have to have things spelled out for them in black and white. And unfortuately there are way too many people like con-man who turn to their nonsensical Bible to have it spelled out, cherry picking from it, especially the Old Testament, to validate their reasons to hate and to judge others.

He reminds me of Clinton and his ludicrous, infamous remark of "It depends on what your definition of IS is." I understand that any politician is always concerned about poll numbers and what statement is going to resonate with or turn off which segment of the population. But this is an issue where one needs to make a definite stand one way or the other and let the cards fall where they may. The more he keeps waffling on this the more it's going to hurt him.

I'm a young conservative of Ron Paul-esque politics, and this sort of hurts my feelings. I fight for same-sex marriage in my personal and political life, and have typically voted Republican. Issues are not this black and white. Yes, I would say the extreme right wing conservatives are mostly against gay marriage, but more and more of my generation supports it along with any other basic constitutional right.

I roll my eyes at the way liberals act as if Democrats are the ones who will fix everything, grant everyone equal rights, and fix the issue of poverty in this country. Republicans sure can be stupid and cruel, but Democrats, especially the kind of this Obama era, are completely inept flip-floppers who care more about being popular with the public than actually standing for what's right.

Acceptance of gay marriage will come about through education and judicial legislation. Have thoughtful discussions with your conservative, religious friends instead of making it seem like you're trying to tear away their religion and beliefs and spitting on everything they care about, like God and patriotism. They'll come around - I did. It just takes a little empathy and education, and YES, even Republicans have it.

Well, Conservative, I agree with the Jewish Rabbi that I quoted earlier today. This is a constitutional issue. As for my religious perspective, I disagree with your view on this issue. The way I see things is that Jesus loved everybody, strongly encouraged us to love everybody, and what’s good enough for Jesus should be good enough for the rest of us.

All mankind will see God’s salvation. [Luke 3.6]

When I am lifted up, I will draw all men to myself. [John 12.32]

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. [Corinthians 15:22]

God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on all men. [Romans 11:32]

Your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should be lost. [Matthew 18:14]

A time is coming and has not come when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. [John 4:23]

Who are you trying FOOL? Psalm 14: 1: The "FOOL hath said in his heart, there is no GOD. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good."

YOU know of the group of atheists by the name of "The North American Man/Boy Love Association" (NAMBLA). They are a "pedophile and pederasty advocacy organization in the United States that works to ABOLISH AGE AND CONSENT LAWS criminalizing adult sexual involvement with minors that did not involve coercion."

When you deny the existence of GOD, and thus accountability for sin and here the sin of homosexuality specifically, the rest is easy.

"no one will defend sex between an adult and a minor. EVER." Who appointed you their spokesman. Also, some of the more reserved atheist on this site have stated that homosexuality is ok as long as they "love" each other. That is what the atheist group NAMBLA also says.

Conservative,

There is actually a non-atheist majority group that tends to support adult/minor sexual relationships, it's called the Catholic Church. Gays and lesbians deserve the basic right of marriage. They are human beings and our Constitution grants them full rights. Religion poisons everything. It leads seemingly good people to pass judgement on others for simply being born a certain way. It's not about democrat or republican. This is a religion vs. logic/reason/human rights issue.

I am not their spokesperson and I think that NAMBLA should be abolished and their members jailed.

Where is that non-religious reason for denying gay adults their full rights under the constitution? Stop dodging by trying to falsely equate this with pedophilia.

You poor, poor woman. Satan has deceived you into believing in a universal salvation. A salvation for everyone irregardless of sin. By your logic even Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Saddam Hussein, Ho Chi Minh, Mussolini, Castro, and serial killers to name some will not experience Hell. You could not be more deceived.

Do you think God is going to drag ikeithlulu into heaven kicking and screaming?

Jesus Christ died on the cross because he loved his creation, but you do not realize the meaning of 1 Corinthians 15:22, "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

Briefly, all mankind was represented by Adam and are spiritually dead. Those of us "in Christ" have a spiritual relationship with him, have repented of our sins, (no salvation apart from repentance) and no longer live in sin. By being "in Christ", he paid the penalty of death for the sins of those have received him as their personal Savior and has made him the LORD of their life. Again, it is a personal relationship not just some mental agreement that Christ died on a cross.

Going back to homosexuality. Those who practice it have NOT repented of their sins, and have not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. You will never see a homosexual sharing the plan of salvation with anyone for the hypocrisy would be overwhelmingly obvious.

One last thing, a rabbi does not accept the New Testament as Scripture nor Jesus Christ as the Messiah but they will one day when Christ returns. Still, there are many rabbis who would acknowledge the gross sinfulness of homosexuality.

conservative,

NAMBLA supports sex between an adult and a child, and wants to abolish the age of consent. Adults have power and persuasive means that children may not know how to combat.

The fact that you suggests that this as in any way similar to two consenting adults who want to make a life together is actually pretty scary and makes me wonder about your ability to actually comprehend basic realities in life.

Your over-simplification is stunning. You must actively purge reason from your mind to think this way. That's what's so dissapointing. I don't believe you're even trying to find or speak the truth. You seem only trying to win an argument.

Yours is truly a pitiful argument.

And that should be totally within your rights. A church may not perform the ceremony, and that is their right.

Two consenting adults should be able to form such a contract. It can be totally platonic. Or not. It is NONE of our business. None.

OK, you abdicated as self appointed spokesman for others and tacitly acknowledged that some atheists do advocate sex with boys.

As a Christian my recognized authority is the word of GOD contained in Scripture. He is the authority on all matters pertaining to life and Godliness. He says homosexuality is an abomination and he says NO homosexual will enter into his kingdom ( 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ) We will both stand before him one day in judgrment. I will not follow your path of denial for GOD says you are are a FOOL ( Psalm 14: 1: The "FOOL hath said in his heart, there is no GOD ).

You are one arrogant heathen, but then all atheists are.

Two males or two females can't marry. It is sexual perversion and word perversion, homosexuality, sin and an abomination in the sight of GOD and recorded in Scripture. When are you going to get it?

at 5:42 you wrote regarding intering heaven "What makes you think I want to go?"

I wrote that to mountainlaurel regarding her erroneous belief in universal salvation which would include even you. Ridiculous huh? You knee jerked as usual.

Note the "that did not involve coercion." Now judges often ask minors in custody cases their wishes for the parent they want to live with. We know there are Lieberal, GODless judges and homosexual judges as well.

Get my drift?

I have not mentioned Catholics or their faith or even used the word Catholic, you obviously want to draw me into some argument you think you might win. You are a miserable person. I know this because ALL atheists are miserable.

Do you think God is pleased with or proud of the Catholic Church for moving Priests to other areas of the country to hide their atrocities? Crossing the line my a$$. Concervative, climb off the moral high horse. Untill age of consent laws were enacted "good Christian folk" were marrying off their 13 year old daugthters to men well into their 40's or older. To this day in some states the legal age for marriage is 14 with parents' approval. The taboo against homosexuality is a man made construct, considering homosexuality has been obseved in over 500 species including dolphins, chimpanzees, penguins, and swans.

Not all Christians share your perspective, Conservative. For example, I’ve always been taught that grace will triumph in the end and we should pray for these politicians who commit these great evils. The same way we pray for child abusers, spouse abusers, child molesters, embezzlers, murderers, rapists, con artists, preachers who lie, etc.

Some people will receive redemption in this life, but others will experience redemption after their death. The point being that God and grace will triumph in the end, but it will not be complete until every last person has been redeemed. In the meantime, the goal for the living is “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. [Romans 12:21]

The bottomline is this same sex marriage issue is as the Jewish Rabbi Dov Gartenberg said about the California's Prop 8 decision: “the decision about same sex marriage had to be within the framework of the secular authority of the state.” It’s ”a constitutional matter in which religious opinion for or against cannot be relied upon.” It’s “essentially a matter of rights.“

patriot1, civil rights are not up to a vote. Loving vs. Virginia states that marriage is a fundimental civil right. Historically the judicial branch has upheld civil rights because in the legislative branch the majority can run roughshod over the rights of the minority. When the USSC strikes down all these rediculous bans (as they did in 1967 with the bans on interracial marriage) N. C.'s ban will become null and void.

May 8, 2012 at 10:46 p.m.

Then you throw in how many people didn't vote, and I wouldn't be so sure you have as substantial a majority as you're trying to have us believe.

Besides, since when was screaming for something a sign that it was necessarily right? I've had a lot of toddlers throwing tantrums, they still have their bath and nap time.

I bet a lawsuit or two will be filed tomorrow.

lkeithlu, conservative can't think of a non-religious reason for anything. Everything must be done by God's Will.

So much for freedom. So much for equality. So much for justice.
