Mary Woodruff Griffin picks Washington & Lee

Griffin picks Washington and Lee

GPS soccer standout Mary Woodruff Griffin has committed to play this fall for NCAA Division III member Washington & Lee in Lexington, Va.

She was co-MVP of the 2011 GPS team and a three-time Best of Preps honoree.

Bruisers coach Leland Strang said Griffin's "passion and enthusiasm for the game are obvious, and her skill and knowledge of the game make her an adaptable, indispensable player. I am confident she will continue to thrive, compete and impact her new environmen."

Griffin served as a GPS Ambassador and was a member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society. She tutors at Northside Neighborhood House.

King College signs cyclist Sara Megan Rogers from Soddy-Daisy

Sara Megan Rogers from Soddy-Daisy High School has signed papers to join the nationally recognized King College cycling program.

Rogers has been racing for two seasons, according to the Bristol school's release announcing her signing, and is the reigning Tennessee junior female champion in road racing, time trial and criterium. She also pedaled in Georgia state races and was second in the junior female criterium and in the Cat-4 women's crit and was third in the Georgia junior female overall standings.

"We are excited to have her join us," King coach Dan Kreiss said. "She is a great fit for our program and has the desire to achieve both on the bike and in the classroom."

Area has 16 picked

Sixteen players from area schools were picked for the Tennessee seventh- and eighth-grade teams that will face Kentucky in football all-star games on June 16.

Area eighth-graders are Shannon Spralls of Tyner, Jeffrey Coleman of East Hamilton, Adrian Thomas of Hunter, Rickie King from Warren County, Jeremiah Jackson and Rashun Freeman of Ooltewah, Landon Elrod and Hunter Chance from McCallie and Gage Upshaw, Ryan Parker and Ulysses Strawter from Baylor. Seventh-graders are East Hamilton's Rico Dozier and Tyner's Tyrik Stewart, Jaylan Nowell, Giovanni Hightower and Demetrius Phillips.
