Window-puncher bleeds to death

ATHENS, Ga. -- Authorities say an Athens man bled to death after punching out a window at a former girlfriend's apartment.

Police said they found 37-year-old Elmario Rayshawn Griffith bleeding profusely from his arm shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that Griffith was still conscious, but he would not tell officers what had happened. Investigators determined that at some point during a dispute with the former girlfriend, Griffith punched a window and severed an artery.

He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, where he later died.

Athens-Clarke police Capt. Clarence Holeman said no foul play is suspected in the death.

Four men fined for artifact thefts

KNOXVILLE -- Four Alabama men have been fined in federal court after stealing cultural artifacts from Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir property.

According to a news release from the TVA, Roger Fountain, Heath Dubois and John Bates pleaded guilty to violating the Archaeological Resource Protection Act for thefts at Pickwick Reservoir on the Tennessee-Alabama border.

A fourth man, Matthew Buttrman, pleaded guilty to theft of government property for stealing American Indian relics from Alabama's Guntersville Reservoir.

The men were sentenced in federal court in Huntsville last week to serve one year of probation, and each was ordered to pay a $500 fine.

TVA executive David Jolley said the utility has a team of investigators that works hard to protect the region's cultural history from thieves.

Man convicted in home invasion

DALTON, GA. -- A Dalton man was convicted Wednesday on charges related to a home-invasion robbery last June of a man and his infant daughter.

Lavalis Sentell Ward, 29, was convicted of criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of burglary, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a tool for the commission of a crime, violating the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, and possession by a firearm of a convicted felon.

Superior Judge Cindy Morris set sentencing for Ward for Friday at 9 a.m.
