The McCallie School rowing team continued its strong season with four first-place finishes and three seconds last weekend in the Southeast Regional Championships at Sarasota, Fla. McCallie won more boys' races than any other school program and was the only boys' winner from outside Florida.
The varsity lightweight 4 of Drew Hettenbach, August Wherry, Ross Weiser, Fletcher Sims and coxswain J.T. Wu qualified for the USRowing Youth Nationals being held June 8-10 at Oak Ridge with their win. Other Blue Tornado winners were the second varsity 8 (Alex Sanford, Dallas Condra, Sam Hornsby, Randall Jackson, Spencer Gardner, Alex Eliades, Taylor Oscar, Zac Frazier and Michael Daniels) and the second and third varsity 4 boats (Sanford, Condra, Hornsby, Eliades and Gordon Davenport, and Bassem Salama, John Scott, Connor Talley, Oscar Talley and Grant Maddock).
The McCallie varsity 8 of Hettenbach, Ellis Harr, Mike Ray, Wherry, Hank Moore, Walt Johnson, Weiser, Sims and Wu finished second, as did the third varsity 8 and the novice 8 boat, losing by less than three feet. The Tornado's novice quad was fourth; the varsity 4 was fifth.
Chattanooga Junior Rowing's top finishes were reported in Monday's paper.
