UTC's Fuzzard on All-America team

Two-time Southern Conference softball player of the year Michelle Fuzzard of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was announced Wednesday as a third-team All-American by College Sports Madness. The fifth-year senior from Huntington Beach, Calif., had a .416 batting average in 2012 to help the Lady Mocs finish with the best team average in NCAA Division I for the second consecutive year, and she finished in the top 20 nationally in RBIs (63), slugging percentage (.846) and on-base percentage (.545). Fuzzard had career highs in runs scored (52), doubles (16), home runs (16) and walks (39). She also had a 15-7 record as a pitcher with a 3.34 earned run average.

Golf

NASHVILLE -- Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golfer Derek Rende shot an even-par 71 during the second of three rounds Wednesday in the Tennessee Open which is being played at Gaylord Springs Golf Links in Nashville. Rende, who prepped at Soddy-Daisy and is now a professional, is in second place after his opening-round 7-under-64. He trails amateur Craig Smith of Nashville by two strokes. Smith shot an 8-under 63 on Wednesday. Former Cleveland resident Nick Bailes is six shots off the pace at 3-under 139. The Honors Course member Tim Jackson is 2 under. Richard Spangler of Hixson and rising high school senior Brooks Thomas of Chattanooga are tied for 13th at 144.

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lee University women's golf team is in 13th place at 40-over after the first two rounds of the NAIA women's championship which are being played at Link Hills Golf and Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn. The Lady Flames are 20 shots behind first-place British Columbia which owns a one-shot lead over Savannah College of Arts & Design and two shots over Shorter. Lee's Geandra Almeida is tied for 25th at 9-over 153 with two rounds left to play. Nikki Stewart of SCAD leads the medalist race at 4 under.

Rowing

• Joanna Poinsatte of Hixson, an alumna of Chattanooga Junior Rowing, is a junior member of the University of Notre Dame women's rowing team that won the Big East Conference championship last weekend in Princeton, N.J. Poinsatte was in the winning varsity 8 boat. Notre Dame will be among the 16 teams in the NCAA Division I championships May 25-27, also at Princeton.

Soccer

• East Ridge Futbol Club director of coaching Matt Yelton, also the coach of the four-time defending NAIA champion Lee University women's soccer team, has added veteran East Ridge Soccer Association DOC Dean Wilson and his own Lady Flames assistant, Chris Walker, as technical directors for the new organization that is preparing for tryouts starting May 22. Among other new coaches in the ERFC program are former Lee All-Americans Marina Lima and Tiffany Walker and former Lee men's goalkeeper Luigi Beauzile. Chris Walker is also a former Flames standout, and Tiffany Walker is the Bradley Central High School coach.
