Every time Anfernee Hardaway's cellphone rings, she's there in living color, her sweetness jumping off the screensaver.
It is Louise Hardaway, Anfernee's late grandmother, who raised him starting at age 5 when his mother hit the road to pursue a singing career. Louise is clutching a gift from her favorite grandson, holding a pendant to her heart as an unmistakable message of how she adored the little boy she repeatedly called "pretty," which eventually morphed into his nickname "Penny."
Last Oct. 1, Louise Hardaway, at age 95, passed away after complications from pneumonia.
