Chattanooga's Lookouts win on Smith double in 10th

One-run games have not gone the way of the Chattanooga Lookouts this season, but Blake Smith changed that at least for a night.

Smith's one-out double into the right-field corner in the 10th inning Saturday scored Brahiam Maldonado for a 5-4 win over Huntsville before a crowd of 5,951 at AT&T Field.

The Lookouts (20-23) improved to just 5-10 in one-run games this season. Saturday's victory followed Friday night's 4-3 setback in 11 innings, when Chattanooga walked in the go-ahead run and then loaded the bases with nobody out only to fizzle.

"We've pretty much been in nail-biters all year, and for us not to come out on top is always kind of a bummer, but you have to move on," Lookouts infielder Travis Denker said.

Smith was 4-for-5 with a triple, two doubles and four RBIs. His game-winner followed Maldonado reaching on a fielding error.

Lookouts starting pitcher Chris Withrow retired the first nine batters, seven by strikeout. He had a 2-0 lead to work with when Smith's triple down the right-field line in the third inning scored Nick Buss and Rafael Ynoa.

Withrow gave up two runs in the fourth inning, and he left a 2-2 game in the sixth after allowing a Josh Prince single to right and walking Scooter Gannett. Javier Solano replaced Withrow and was promptly greeted by a Hunter Morris triple to left-center that made it 4-2.

The Lookouts pulled within 4-3 later in the sixth when Ynoa and Smith opened with doubles, and J.T. Wise tied it in the seventh with a home run to left.

Nathan Eovaldi (1-2, 3.72 ERA) is scheduled to start today's 2:15 game for the Lookouts, and Kyle Heckathorn (2-2, 4.17) is listed for the Stars. The 6-foot-6, 249-pound Heckathorn pitched for Ringgold High School and Kennesaw State before the Milwaukee Brewers made him the 47th overall pick in the 2009 draft.

Heckathorn has made eight starts with the Stars this season and has 40 strikeouts and only seven walks.
