Lieberals seem to think that providing health care and the money to pay for it are two separate issues. They also seem to think that if we make it "free" everyone will be better off.

"Free" is a Lieberal lie and better healthcare for all when it is "free" is another Lieberal lie.

Under a "free" healthcare system money that could be used to save and prolong lives would instead be used to treat the minor matters of those who will flood doctor's offices.

Those dollars spent for birth control for millions would not be used to save and prolong lives.

True story. Had two identical surgeries, one due to a sports injury the other was on the job injury. I arranged to pay for the sports related operation myself, minus any insurance company involvement. Workman's Comp did everything involved in the work injury. The charges for the self pay was under $3500. The one bill that I saw from the Workman's Comp was over $17,000. Same exact services - at least 400% more billed to WC. This is a racket perpetrated by the Medical profession and Insurance companies. Not me, not the government.

Those "minor matters" that you refer to are things like physicals and treating illnesses in their early stages. Those things, if left undetected and untreated, are what become those late-stage diseases that cost so much more to treat. It would be far better to have more people going to the doctor early in the game and preventing serious illnesses from ever occurring than waiting until it's too late and flooding the emergency rooms like they do now.

As for "free heath care," no one is talking about that but you libertarian/teabagging bozos who are putting those words in our mouths. Of course universal coverage wouldn't be free. We would all have to pay for it in higher taxes (OMG, there's that word that makes the right-wing-nuts quiver and quake like a vampire in the sunlight) But the taxes would be something that more people could afford, unlike the costs of health insurance today, which only the very wealthy can afford - or those lucky enough to work for a company that still provides it. And a hidden tax already exists anyway. Every time you get an "adjustment" (increase) in your insurance premiums that is in large part due the insurance companies raising their rates to pay the hospitals who every year have to inflate their rates to defray the costs of those uninsured people who show up in the emergency rooms. Whether you like it or not, you are already paying a "tax" to cover those people you say you shouldn't have to pay for.

Over 47% of the Ameican people pay no federal income taxes and the majority of these are eligible for and demand free ( to them ) government programs.

Socialized healthcare will be free ( to them ) to these as well.

As our health system currently works, it is more important that its various components function as profit centers than care for the medical needs of patients. I do not equate greed with reason.

Just curious, how should we count all the preachers that do nothing but preach for their wages? Since the churches are tax exempt, the preachers are living off of other people's money, aye? Wonder what percentage have other jobs and pay taxes. If we are going to cut programs, I vote we cut the churches with their do-nothing preachers that take their money from all of us supporting them. MTJohn...based on my brief comment, one would not really know whether I have a true understanding of Marxism or not. You are taking quite a leap there. I daresay I have as true an understanding of it as you or anyone else. I have read everything by Karl Marx and many other books and in-depth essays and articles on all manner of socio-economic-political philosophies and ideologies. There has never been a truly Marxist state and probably never will be. The Communist state that Marx spoke of and envisioned Socialism evolving to never came to fruition in the communist government of the Soviet Union. That was a thoroughly corrupt, fascist form of government, an ugly and aberrant political system that benefited a few and left the masses struggling in squalor. Yet some loose concept of that system is what most righties refer to when they think of Marxism or Communism. They actually throw all the terms of socialism, marxism, and communism in the same pot and think of it as a stew of something evil and sordid. I doubt that any of them have any clue as to the distinctions or what an idealized version of any of them would really be.

What we have in this country today is a far cry from anything purely socialistic, and I know of no one on the political scene who is calling for a purely socialistic or marxist state. Sure, we have elements of socialism, and that can be a viable system, but we are still predominantly a capitalistic society (for better or worse). Calling for necessary and sensible regulations on business is not socialistic - and that is all that Obama has done or tried to do so far, not take them over and own them. Our government - Obama included - still believes in the right of the individual to indulge in free market practices and to make a profit, and I think that anyone who sees any of the president's actions as blatantly or even subtly socialistic is utterly delusional.

Conservative - what is your basis for assuming that our health care should be delivered by a "business"? The largest health care provider in my community is organized as a "not for profit". Likewise, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and other insurance providers are organized as "not for profit". Certainly, not for profits need to break even, while paying their employees fair wages. But, by definition, they are not organized for the purpose of making profit - even though many seem to function that way.

When a company fails to make a profit and goes out of business there are many consequences not only to the owners but to governments and consumers as well.

For example a grocery store in a small town in Tennessee which doesn't make a profit and goes out of business means the local consumers often have to drive many miles to another store. Noticed the price of gasoline lately?

Governments lose taxes paid by the store owner and his employees plus they lose their jobs. They in turn don't have money to spend which hurts the economy. It's silly and destructive to American productivity to oppose profits.

Our economy is dependent on the profit motive. People who go into business seek to make a profit. They will not risk their capital unless they think they can make a profit.

The owner of a business pays taxes, his employees pay taxes, he provides a good or service which helps his fellow man by raising his standard of living and it all starts with capital and the desire to make a profit.

I met a man in FL who got a liver because of Tenncare when he lived in Memphis. He heard my drawl and came by to chat. Said he owes his life to Gov Bredeson and to TN. Told me about loosing his job when the company shut down working small wage jobs to get by and so forth. You know: a human with a life story. I always think of him when this topic comes up because it's easy to say things untill you are face to face with someone who is just happy to be alive. Him and I know that the rest is just stuff

So large companies outsource the jobs and fire Americans, replace them with machines. Then there aren't enough jobs with benifits and the Americans must use the ER for basic heathcare. That is unless your poor, elderly or a child. Then you get medicare or medicaid to help you out. So it is only the middle class and the rich who are left having to pay for medical services through 3rd party insurance. And of course you are paying for everyone else through taxation and increased copays and premiums. Untill you loose your job then you will find yourself in the ER with the rest of the folks who don't have another option. So will you sign in and be seen or will you still call it socialism/marxism?

Medicaid is a volume based system . So the more tests that are ordered the more reimbersment the hospital/doctor recieve. That is because the government pays based on sevices rendered. So if you have a poor person with no means to pay who shows up in ER the more you do the more you get from the Gov(taxpayers). If you don't order multiple tests that you think are probably not needed you as a Dr /PA will get to meet some nice lawyers who will 2nd and 3rd guess everything you have and have not done. So it is better for everyone involved to order multiple needless tests. The Dr/pa probably won't get sued the PT thinks they are getting better care and the hospital get a little more reimbersment. Of course the tax payer will make up the difference. Right now there is no reason for a poor person not to show up in the ER with a headache x 1 hour or indigestion or cronic back pain or an ambulance ride for tick bite. When they arive the cycle will continue , more tests ($)and a taxpayer funded taxi ride home.

Right. But, when it comes to health care, 1) as I noted above, many of the service providers and some of the insurance companies are chartered as not-for-profit organizations; 2) I don't think there is any compelling data to suggest that a free market solution will yield ensure better health care; and, 3) a truly free market solution would price half or more of our population out of health care.

And, as a footnote, if you are paying for your health care and paying for your health insurance (or receive health insurance as an employment benefit) you already are paying for the health care of other folks who can't afford it - it's called cost shifting. In my opinion, a single payer solution would be a better and more honest way for all of us to share the cost of universal health care than the current system that inflates to cost of health care for those who can pay for it to cover the costs for those who cannot.
