The Tennessee Valley Authority was chosen as a finalist for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award for its support of National Guard and Reserve employees. TVA was chosen to be among only 30 finalists nationwide from 3,236 nominations received this year from Guard and Reserve service members.
TVA sent 4,000 care packages to service members overseas in the past year, and the federal utility supports its Guard and Reserve employees by training supervisors on military employment and re-employment laws, and posting information about these policies in employee break rooms and company newsletters. The employer also seeks to hire military members through the "Helmets to Hardhats" program, helping service members earn an engineering degree and guaranteeing a job upon graduation.
