Sewanee athletic director Mark Webb released the names of this year's seven inductees for the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame on Tuesday, and they include the first equestrian member: Carrie Barske of the class of 2002. She will be officially inducted the weekend of Sept. 7-8 along with the late W.D. Cleveland, a track and football star from the class of 1892; school decathlon record-holder Brooks Corzine ('87); football offensive lineman and former shot put record-holder Antonio Crook ('00); linebacker and fullback standout Dan Davis ('65); women's golfer Lindsay Fields Eun ('01); and football and baseball captain and all-conference player Mallory Nimocks ('81).
• The University of Tennessee's Big Orange Caravan was in Atlanta on Tuesday and will be at the Chattanooga Convention Center this evening with football coach Derek Dooley and basketball coaches Cuonzo Martin and Holly Warlick expected to join athletic director Dave Hart. Doors will open at 5:30 for the 6 p.m. hamburgers and hot dogs dinner, and tickets cost $25. The program will start at 7 p.m.
Softball
• GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Shorter University will play this afternoon for the NAIA national softball championship after winning 5-1 Tuesday against fellow Georgia school and Southern States Athletic Conference member Brenau. Freshman pitcher Maddie Bray from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High school struck out seven batters and negated nine hits in improving to 17-5, and senior shortstop Emily Clements from LaFayette High was 2-for-3 with a fourth-inning home run and two runs scored. The Lady Hawks (52-11) must lose twice to Oklahoma City, which edged Brenau 2-1 in the losers-bracket final, to keep from claiming the title. Jessica Bowman from Rainsville, Ala., was one of five Shorter juniors and seniors listed as NAIA softball Scholar-Athletes, along with Kelly Crawford and Caitlin Beshears from Lee University and Jessica Southern from Bryan.
Track & Field
• Sewanee freshman Sally Warm from Baylor School will be competing in the NCAA Division III track and field meet this weekend in Claremont, Calif. The Northport, Mich., resident will be in the high jump Friday afternoon. She set the school record with what then was the fourth highest Division III women's jump of the season. "I am really proud of Sally for all her accomplishments this season," coach Jeff Heitzenrater said. "She has worked hard and now gets to compete against the best jumpers in the nation in Division III."
Golf
• SALEM, Ore. -- Lee University is tied for 11th place and Tennessee Wesleyan is tied for 19th out of 29 teams after the first day of the 2012 NAIA men's golf national tournament at Creekside Country Club. Jeremy Lawson shot a 76 and Matt Emery had a 77 to lead Lee to its 312, 16 shots behind leader Victoria. Caleb Roberson shot 79 and JB Eksteen and Hunter Vest had 80s in cold, windy, rainy conditions. After a suspension of play, Wesleyan didn't finish but Josh Wheeler is 4 over par with a hole to go for the Bulldogs.
