Cameron Clear dismissed from Vols' football team

KNOXVILLE - Tennessee has dismissed Cameron Clear from its football team, the program announced late Friday morning.

The sophomore tight end was arrested on Tuesday after he was caught by UT police with a stolen laptop. He was charged with felony theft of property between $1,000 and $10,000 and spent most of Tuesday in jail.

Volunteers coach Derek Dooley suspended Clear indefinitely on Wednesday and after meeting with Clear said Wednesday night he needed to finish gathering information before making a decision.

"It hurts anytime a player is dismissed from the program, but there comes a time when a player's actions dictate that his privilege of being a part of this team should be removed," Dooley said in UT's release.

"We will continue to support Cam and his family to help him learn from his actions and become the person and player I believe he has the potential to be.”

Clear, the 6-foot-6, 283-pound Memphis native, caught just one pass as a freshman, but he finished the season as the Vols' second tight end, left spring practice last month in the same spot and figured to have an expanded role next fall.
