Dayton Police Department officers work the scene of a crash between a car and two motorcycles that occurred on Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. Police Chief Chris Sneed said at least one person was killed, but the investigation wasn't complete Saturday evening.
Photo by Kimberly McMillianDAYTON, Tenn. -- At least one person was killed and one or more others suffered unknown injuries Saturday when their motorcycles collided with a car on U.S. Highway 27 North, authorities said.
Eyewitnesses said the motorcyclists, members of the Defiant Crew from either Tennessee or Georgia, were staying at a nearby hotel for a local gathering.
The two motorcycles involved were traveling north about 3 p.m. when they collided with a white, late-model Grand Am in the turn lane at the intersection with Black Oak Ridge Road and Highway 27. It wasn't immediately clear whether the car or the bikes had the green light.
Some witnesses thought one of the bikes might have carried a man and a woman and the other a single rider.
"One woman flew in the air, and the other driver landed under a truck," according to an eyewitness who was waiting at the Black Oak Ridge Road traffic light. He didn't want his name used.
Emergency workers performed CPR on an approximately 6-foot male victim before placing him in an ambulance and taking him to a local hospital. A Defiant Crew Tennessee badge bearing the name "Doc" lay in the street.
Northbound traffic was delayed for more than an hour, while southbound traffic resumed around 4 p.m.
Leather-clad riders huddled in groups along the highway, in the street and at two nearby convenience stores while they watched fellow riders fight for their lives.
The Dayton Police Department investigated the crash and was still interviewing witnesses Saturday evening.
No information was available on the Grand Am's driver. Police Chief Chris Sneed did not release any names. He said more information will be available when the investigation is complete.
