THINGS I WISH MY KIDS WOULD ASK ME

EDITOR'S NOTE: Barry Courter has a 23-year-old son who graduated from college last year and an 18-year-old daughter who is a freshman in college.

Q: Dad, is it ever OK to quit something?

A: If you are doing something that is hurting you, yes of course you should quit. Banging your thumb with a hammer is an easy example, but if you are doing something that is keeping you from doing your school work, your job or caring for your family, that is harmful also. It's a tougher call if it's something you've committed to, like a sports team. You need to honor commitments in which other people are depending on you. Quitting because things simply aren't going your way is a bad habit to get into.
