Covenant earns GSAC top honors

Middle hitter Chelsea Van Dyk of Covenant College is the player of the year and the freshman of the year in Great South Athletic Conference volleyball for 2012, and the Lady Scots' Heather Taylor was voted coach of the year. Junior libero Estes Carlson, sophomore setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick and senior middle hitter Jessica Chittenden joined Van Dyk on the all-conference team, and outside hitter Cora Schroeder joined her on the all-freshman team from Covenant (22-6, 10-0). Van Dyk, from Manhattan, Mont., led the GSAC in kills with 360 and in hitting percentage at .381; she had three matches with at least 20 kills, including one with 25.

• Freshman Briana Reid had 17 kills and 26 digs as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga rallied to win 3-2 over visiting UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference volleyball Friday, 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12. Heather Parman had 15 kills and Sarah Batterton, Christina Teter and Lauren Gainer added 13, 12 and 11 for the Mocs (11-17, 5-8), while Bridget Camacho had 60 assists and 12 digs and Paula Passmore and Melissa Green contributed 29 and 23 digs. Olivia Humphries had 17 kills and 15 digs for UNCG (13-12, 7-6).

• First-place Bryan College won 21-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 15-11 at Milligan in Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball Friday night. Kylie Whaley had 20 kills for Milligan (18-14, 12-5), which dropped out of a tie for second place with the tough loss. Meghan Lowry had 17 kills and Carolyn Evans and Chelsea Breaden had 13 apiece for the Lady Lions (27-9, 15-2), who got 45 assists and 16 digs from Taylor Fink, 31 digs from Corrie Walker and 13 digs each from Madison Akins and Breaden. Casey Crump served three aces. Second-place Virginia Intermont (21-8, 13-4) beat Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 in their AAC match at Bristol, Va.

• Marija Zelenovic had 10 kills and Irene Ojukwu and Paula Martins added nine and seven as Lee University overpowered the visiting College of Coastal Georgia in volleyball on Friday, 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. Courtney Wilson and Camil Martinez had 20 and 18 assists for the Lady Flames (24-9), while Libby Peigen and Ojukwu had 12 and 10 digs.

Soccer

• Regular-season co-champion Covenant led the GSAC in 2012 women's soccer all-conference selections with seven. Co-champion Salem College had six on the 22-player team. Representing Covenant (15-4-1, 9-1) were senior defenders Kathryn Allison and Sheri Koenig, senior forwards Katelyn Newsome and Mo Cross, junior defender Mary Buys, sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bales and freshman midfielder Anne Charlotte Strawbridge, who also made the all-freshman team. The Lady Scots have allowed only 14 goals and registered 11 shutout wins this season, and Allison and Buys have scored two apiece while helping Bales and Koenig in that defense. Newsome is the team leader with nine goals, and Cross is second to her with 15 points and has two game-winning scores.

• Bryan College senior midfielders Tom Hemmings and Johannes Muller from England and Germany, respectively, and junior defender Rasheed Malcolm from Jamaica and Lee University senior forward Sias Reyneke from Cleveland were among the 11 college division players on CoSIDA's Capital One Academic All-District 4 men's soccer team for 2012. Reyneke has a 3.92 grade point average while Hemmings has a 3.65 and the other two Lions have 3.42s. Lee plays at 4 p.m. today in an SSAC tournament quarterfinal at Mobile; Bryan is seeded second for the AAC tournament and hosts St. Andrews at 6.

• The Sewanee soccer teams lost Friday in Southern Athletic Association tournament play, the women falling 2-1 to Millsaps at Danville, Ky., and the men being defeated 5-0 by Berry at Birmingham. All three scores in the women's game were in the first half; Jamie Samociuk had the one for Sewanee (8-9), which led 13-7 in shots.

Field Hockey

• Zuie Billings' second-half score enabled Sewanee to beat Transylvania in field hockey for the fourth time this season Friday, 1-0 in the SAA tournament at Memphis. After a 9-1 early victory, the Tigers (7-9) have won the last three meetings by one goal. They outshot the Pioneers (2-15) 25-5 this time. Mary Kate McAlister assisted on the goal. Sewanee faces top seed and host Rhodes today at noon EDT.
