Charter battle runs up costs

Campaign finance records show that supporters of Georgia's charter school amendment have outspent opponents by a significant margin.

Voters will decide today whether to approve the proposed constitutional amendment, which would expand state influence over charter schools.

An analysis of campaign finance records by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows pro-amendment groups have raised more than $2 million. Those groups include national school-choice advocates and for-profit charter school operators.

Town shut down; town hall locked

A North Alabama town is shutting down after leaders couldn't pick a new mayor.

WBRC-TV reports that Cullman County town of Colony closed on Monday.

Town hall is locked, and there's no one authorized to pay bills or make deposits.

The problem is the City Council's inability to select a mayor for the town of about 270 people.

Two candidates tied in the municipal runoff on Oct. 9, sending the decision to the council. But members have deadlocked each time they voted on a new mayor, leaving Colony without a chief executive.

State Sen. Paul Bussman of Cullman says the council doesn't meet quorum requirements since several members' terms expired Sunday. He's taking nominations for new members and hopes a new group can pick a mayor.
