Gerald McCormick leading race

State Rep. Gerald McCormick, incumbent Republican speaker of the Tennessee state house of representatives, coasted easily to an early win over independent challenger Rodger Cooksey.

McCormick did not face a Democratic challenger in the state’s 26th District. The race was not expected to be close. McCormick led 74 percent to 25 percent, or 16,494 votes to 5,698 votes, according to unofficial Tennessee Department of State results.
