At last it is over. Now if congress and the president will work as hard at doing their jobs as they did campaigning things should not get a lot worse. The countries default, if it occurs, will be caused by congress not the president.

Those voting for Romney are disapointed now but those voting for Obama will be disapointed many times for four years while those supporting Romney can say I told you. A Romney win would have done the same for Obama's backers with them able to repeatedly say I told you to Romney supporters.

Stocks. Plan on a weaker dollar and rising prices in many commodities with coal stocks likely seeing a major down trend.

This was a race that the GOP could have won, if they didn't claim to have a monopoly on patriotism, if they did not claim to "take America back" (from who?) that they did not claim to be for Judeo-Christian values (implying that liberals are not). I have no problem with a party that wants to approach the economy or foreign relations in different ways (I may not agree or vote for them) but I am pretty tired of being told in so many ways that if I am not conservative and not Christian that I am not American. I suspect that I am not alone.

For the past several months, I've kept less of an eye on this forum. When I did read it, I saw many posts declaring Obama would lose the election.

Rather than respond here, I did something else. I volunteered time at Obama for America and called people in swing states around the country and spoke to them and encouraged them to vote. It was clear months ago that this country was divided and the key to victory was not changing the minds of others but mobilizing the base.

This was done by thousands of people across the United States.

However, as we neared the end, more and more potential voters said they were turned off by Romney's ever shifting positions. He was losing voters because he didn't have enough specifics and because he was making promises that didn't add up.

So Jack, I am going back to my job today. I'm fortunate enough to be in the 1%. And today, I don't know if any of my hundreds of phone calls made a difference, but I know it made more of a difference than sitting in front of a computer taking pot shots at my fellow Americans.

I hope this election will dull the hubris of conservatives who said they would not work with this President. Now that they have failed in their SOLE goal of making him a one turn president, perhaps they will except his hand as it reaches across he aisle and they will work with the president for the good of their country rather than the good of their party.

New Hampshire now has women in all their House and Senate positions, and governor.

And the presidential election wasn’t as close as I thought it would be. The GOP bet everything on Romney, and they were roundly repudiated. Maybe you really can’t buy everything.

All in all, it was a good night for progressives (Elizabeth Warren, Alan Grayson etc) and a comeuppance for true regressive’s (Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock etc) not to mention the Koch brothers, Karl Rove, Fox News et al.

Romney had to tack to the right to secure his base and this turned off self-defined centrist voters. Obama overwhelmingly carried both liberal and centrist voters. The electorate has gotten wise to the Republican Party; they understand that they are radical conservatives -- out-of-touch with the middle class. Ultimately, that's why Romney lost. It indicates that no Republican presidential candidate would have been electable.

This election could be the best thing that ever happened to the LIBERTARIANS.

CNN is trying to explain how the 300 point drop in the Dow is not a consequence of the election results.

Gary Johnson took over 1.1 million votes. We will never know how many write-in votes Ron Paul got. The combination of the two would certainly eclipse the margin of victory between Obama and Romney several times over.

The republicans retained the House, which puts them in a political pickle. Without legislative action two things will happen January 1, 2013 when we all sail off the so-called ‘Fiscal Cliff.’

First, the tax cuts expire and we’ll owe more to the IRS.

Second, a massive cut in military spending will kick in.

The President will propose a Bill to keep tax cuts in place for lower and middle income people while raising the top rate about 3% on income over $250,000. He’ll also retain most of the military spending but not all.

If the House rejects his Bill they will be responsible for raising taxes and cutting defense spending.

They have two choices. What are they going to do?

I am sure you are correct about the bounce, it will probably begin later today. The fundamentals are the same but it is hard to imagine them turning in a positive direction as long as Washington continues to try to run things and focuses on redistribution to solve societies ills.

Tennesee's Davidson and Shelby counties both went for Obama, as well.

Tennesee will lean right as long as its population is fundamentally rural and suburban. As the southern cities grow, that dynamic could easily change.

I'm really wondering if the GOP will learn anything from the shellacking they took yesterday. As long as the public faces of the Republicans are certified fruit bats like Donald Trump, Glenn Beck, Todd Akin, Richard Mourdock, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Ted Nugent, Hank Williams, Jr., Dick Cheney, Jack Welch, Scott Desjarlais (and so forth), the GOP will never win another presidential election again. With our Country divided in half I really have a dim view of the future. When it was announced that Obama won the election I watched the crowd in Chicago jumping up and down, smiling, fist bumping, waving small America flags. I couldn’t believe the parents and grandparents that were celebrating when their children and grandchildren will have to pay for our 16 trillion (and counting) debt. The young people celebrating who will still not have jobs available to them when they graduate from college. People in the crowd who just love the fact that then can receive welfare and don’t have to look for work, get free healthcare, cell phones, and being in the Country illegally knowing nothing will happen to them. Big City Mayors celebrating and who ignore the fact that their part of the decades long history of ruining their cities, using the liberal template.

A GOP Strategist's Analysis

Sandy probably blunted some of Romney's momentum but what really stopped it was Romney's continued inability to obtain a reasonable vote share with key constituent blocks, including blacks, Hispanics, young people and the working class.

Quite simply: he failed to gain the trust of those voters. Completely. By a 2-to-1 margin, voters thought Obama "cared more about people like them." You don't win elections when you're losing a core metric like that.

Here are some of our flawed assumptions:

We thought young voters would not turn out at the same level as 2008. They did. In fact, they represented 19% of the electorate per exit polls--as high, if not higher, than four years ago.

We said that Democrats would not be +6 over Republicans and if they were, Obama would win. Well, they did and he did. Again, exit polls say Democrats were +6. Romney needed the proportion of Republicans and Democrats to be even to win.

We thought minority turnout would be lower than 2008. It was not. In several important precincts in key states, minorities voted in numbers equal to--and in some cases better than--four years ago.

We thought Romney would win Independents by double digits. He won them, but by just five points.

We thought Romney would have a huge gender advantage among men; it was only seven points. Meanwhile, the President won women by 11 points.

We thought Romney would dominate on being "better able to handle the economy." He only beat the President on this issue by a few points. Not enough.

In a sense, Romney won the campaign he ran. He won 59% of white voters. He probably won two-thirds of white men. But in this day and age that isn't enough.

What Did Not Happen

Wall Street will no doubt reap some benefits from a Romney presidency.

Mr. Romney will appoint new leaders at most financial regulatory agencies, including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, an aggressive rule-writing bureau that has become the scorn of many bankers. Under Republican control, the agencies could also have a lighter touch, bringing fewer enforcement cases against big banks and hedge funds.

In a more significant move, a Romney administration is expected to pursue a makeover of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the new consumer watchdog born out of the Dodd-Frank overhaul. Republicans hope to wrestle control from a single director, Richard Cordray, and refashion the bureau into a bipartisan commission. Mr. Cordray, whose term extends through 2013, was appointed by Mr. Obama during a Congressional recess.

Sallie Mae, the largest student lender in the nation, could be another winner if Mr. Romney is elected. During the race, the Romney campaign hinted that it would allow private lenders back into the system for distributing federal loan money. A Republican administration, some analysts say, would also abandon proposed reforms that would allow students to discharge loan debt in bankruptcy.

The changes could similarly extend to Dodd-Frank, leading authorities to prolong public comment periods for unfinished rules. Under a Republican president, some provisions passed in the wake of the financial crisis could be tweaked.

Ohio Judge Not Amused By Ballot Shenanigans

Lawyers for the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless and the Service Employees International Union, who sued Husted, argued his instructions went beyond what a federal appeals court ordered, illegally shifting the burden for correct paperwork to voters from poll workers.

“Voters should not be disenfranchised due to poll-worker error,” plaintiffs’ attorney Barbara Chisholm told Marbley at the hearing today. “It’s the poll workers’ duty to record this information.”

Lawyers for the state have “a lot of explaining to do,” Marbley told them at the hearing.

“What concerns me is that it was filed on a Friday night at 7 p.m.,” he said, referring to Husted’s order. “The first thought that came to mind was democracy dies in the dark.”

The directive appears to contradict court rulings and state law by ordering the disqualification of ballots, Marbley said.

“You haven’t shown me a law or any facts that justify this,” he said.

Marbley said he would make his decision by Nov. 12.

Really, does anybody think a person (besides through nepotism mind you) is hired for any reason other than what they have to offer?

Absolutely not. You only hire people that can provide what you need. Why would anyone employ anyone for reasons other than that except for a government job? The problem is the high number that have "nothing" to offer and are essentially unemployable. There was a time when a strong back was sufficient but now there are not many with that. I would bet if VW would reveal the number one reason for people being fired it is not getting to work on time or missing too much work.

I cannot imagine the kind of country you envision other than all having the same thing with no one having it if everyone doesn't. There is a difference in equal opportunity and equal distribution. Do you resent the Dr that sacrificed years of his/her life to be able to save your life when you have that heart issue? Do you resent the wealth of those that risk it all to start a business and provide jobs?

I resent the political manipulation and favor showing through the tax codes and other tools of manipulation used by politicians at all levels.

Romney did not offer the necessary solutions but in my opinion is a more credible and sincere person than Obama will ever be. Obama, in my opinion, which is totally different than yours, is a pitiful excuse for the position and I would not trust him under any circumstances. But, he is the president and I do hope he is not faced with too many difficult situations or decisions and we all need to pray he stays safe and healthy. Heaven forbid Biden being in the role of POTUS.

harp3339, you've demonstrated once again why quoting part of what a person says can be highly distorting, since you missed the point of what I had to say.

Namely that somebody who is being employed to do a job is doing something that employer might want to appreciate rather than treat as the sort of thing the employee should kowtow in order to keep.

What do you think of that? Do you think I'm wrong when I point that an employee does something than an employer should appreciate rather than treat with condescension?

But you go straight to the notion that people are fired because it's always their own fault. Does that happen? Sure, but what it seems you'd never consider is the time when it's the bosses ire that leads to termination. Or just their personal advantage. Or sometimes they just coerce employees...much like some tried to do by threatening to fire their workers if Obama won.

But hey, did you notice how you've constructed an imaginary straw-man as to what kind of country I envision? Guess what? What I want? It's not at all like what you imagine. I think you better stop using your imagination, it leads far too much to some dystopian horror that bears little resemblance to reality. Here's something you might fear though...that equal of opportunity cannot exist with too great an inequality of distribution.

You can come up with your rhetorical questions if you like, but so can I: Should I not resent it when a doctor puts off treating me because he's got a golf game, or because he'll get more money from some other patient? Should I not resent it when the insurance company decides to put a bureaucratic hurdle in my way so they can get out of paying for a procedure in order to pad the executive salaries?? Should I not resent it when a business owner who has employed me decides I'm at fault because I won't let them do something on the sly to a customer? Should I not resent it when somebody treats my working for them as something they're entitled to just because they're the boss?

Such questions can be made all day, but they're rarely going to mean much. Why do you think they're worth asking? Do you think I won't recognize the technique?

And if you think for a second that Romney is a sincere or credible person at all, I only have to say your ability to judge character is highly questionable. Obviously you missed his rampant duplicity as he took more positions than an octopus playing Twister, all while coming up with so many dishonest representations of himself and even Obama that you would have to wonder what kind of person would let himself be the spokesperson for such deceit.

But heck, apparently you're deeply afraid of Biden. That's just laughable. Who are you going to demonize next? You know Hillary's in the line of succession too. And even Eric Holder.

One good thing about Obama winning is the left didn't get to riot like they promised. You notice the right isn't rioting, that is because we are not that kind of people. They even said they were going to kill Romney, none of that kind of talk from us right wingers as you libs like to call us.
