Bryan volleyball coach, players honored in AAC

Top-seeded Bryan College defeated Reinhardt 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 on Wednesday and beat Montreat 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15 Thursday in the Appalachian Athletic Conference volleyball tournament in Kingsport, Tenn., and awaits the losers-bracket final between Montreat and Virginia Intermont this morning for the championship match at 2 p.m. today. Carolyn Evans and Chelsea Breaden had 12 and 11 kills, Taylor Fink had 29 assists and Corrie Walker had 25 digs against Reinhardt. Thursday, Meghan Lowry had 13 kills, Evans and Breaden had 12 apiece and Bridgette O'Brien added 11 apiece while Fink had 44 assists and 17 digs, Walker made an astounding 40 digs for the Lady Lions (31-9). Bryan's David Shumaker was honored as AAC coach of the year, Fink was co-setter of the year, Walker was libero of the year and they and Breaden were first-team all-conference. Evans was second-team All-AAC along with Wesleyan's Hayli Raines, and Lowry made the all-freshman team.

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior volleyball player Christina Teter from Signal Mountain wa chosen to the Capital One Academic All-District III first team announced Thursday. The 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Red Bank High School leads the Mocs with 238 kills, 75 total blocks and 15 block solos and carries a 4.0 grade point average as a biology major.

* Covenant College beat visiting Tennessee Temple 25-15, 25-14, 25-15 in volleyball Thursday, as Chelsea Van Dyk had 11 kills and Pretoria den Boer had nine kills and 13 digs to go with Estes Carlson's 15 digs. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 31 assists for the Lady Scots (24-6). Kourtney Chorman had 12 kills and Kiara Govan set 17 assists for Temple (14-16).

* Second-seeded Lee Univesity beat Mobile 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 in round-robin play in the Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Thursday in Montgomery, Ala. Freshman Nicole Sumida led the Lady Flames (25-9) with 13 kills, and Marija Zelenovic and Irene Ojukwu had nine kills each while Camil Martinez had 34 asists and Libby Peigen made 14 digs.

* Sophomore Alex Martin from Ooltewah had 10 kills in Belmont's 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 volleyball victory Tuesday at Tennessee State.

TENNIS

* Chattanooga's Wes Cash and Virginian Mark Vines are two matches away from a "golden slam" in USTA doubles championships this year. Already with three national men's 55 titles, they reached the semifinals of the age group's hardcourt tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 Thursday at Palm Springs, Calif.

Soccer

* The NAIA's top-ranked Lee University women's soccer team will be in the championship match of its last SSAC tournament after beating Brenau 3-0 in a semifinal Thursday in Montgomery, Ala. Amy Cochran's penalty kick gave Lee a 1-0 first-half lead, and Ode Fulutudilu and Charlotte Canlett scored in the second half.

* Third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan beat second-seeded Bryan 4-1 in the AAC men's soccer tournament semifinals Thursday at Milligan. Luke Winter and John Carrier scored in the first half for TWC; Miles Christian scored the Lions' goal. The women's semifinals at Montreat were pushed back a day by wet field conditions, so TWC's Lady Bulldogs play at 11 this morning.

Basketball

* Tennessee Tech transfers Chase Dunn and Will Barnes scored 20 and 19 points and Dunn added seven assists as 15th-ranked Lee defeated No. 12 Freed-Hardeman 85-80 in NAIA Division I men's basketball Thursday night. Corey Billingsley, Duran Blue and Steve Bennett scored 14, 13 and 12 points for the Flames (5-0), and Bennett added eight rebounds to Chad Lee's 14. Chandler Mack led FHU (1-1) with 19 points.

* The Bryan College women's basketball team won 71-55 Thursday at Truett-McConnell as Morgan Burnette scored 23 points and Rachel Calfee added 14, but the Truett-McConnell men edged the Lions 73-70 as Anthony Dorsey contributed 29 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Robert Troino and Tim Fortenberry had 17 and 15 points for Bryan, while Rafael Tyler scored 13 and Brandon Cole had 10 with nine rebounds.

* Piedmont University's junior varsity beat the two-year Georgia Northwestern men's basketball team 60-49 as the Welch College Invitational got under way Thursday in Nashville. Alex Miller was 7-of-10 from the field in scoring 16 points in defeat for the Bobcats (0-2); he also had seven rebounds. Quinton Cotton scored 10 points. Mike Key led Piedmont with 21 points, 17 of those in the first half.

* The Cleveland State women's basketball team outlasted West Georgia Tech 72-66 on Tuesday in LaGrange as Chelsea Jones totaled 17 points and 10 rebounds, Jara Gasper scored 14 points with seven rebounds and Robyn Anthony added 10 points for the Lady Cougars (1-1).

Boxing

* The fourth annual Guns and Hoses Battle of the Badges boxing card pitting area law-enforcement officers against firefighters will be held Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at McKenzie Arena. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, the arena box office and chattanoogagunsandhoses.com at $30 for ringside seats, $25 for other reserved seats and $15 for general admission, or $5 for ages 12-under. The event benefiting the Forgotten Child's Fund and the Westside Boxing Club previously has been held at the Chattanooga Convention Center. Softball

* Chattanooga State has scheduled its Blue-Orange fall softball scrimmage for 1 p.m. Saturday, and that will be followed by the addition of former Lady Tigers All-American Charmaine Johns into the Wall of Fame and a ring ceremony for the 2012 national champions. The public is invited at no cost. Johns was a second-team NJCAA Division I All-American in 2001 and a first-team All-American the next year.
