Longtime business Sherman & Reilly presented key Chattanooga innovation award

Sherman & Reilly, an 85-year-old Chattanooga-based business that makes equipment for the power installation industry, today received the Spirit of Innovation Award from the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce.

Also, Variable Technologies, creator of the NODE smart sensor device, has received the eighth annual Early Innovator Award from the Chattanooga Technology Council.

In addition, officials announced GigTank 2013, a broadband-based business competition that will challenge participants to develop pioneering applications for the Internet.

The recognitions kicked off today's Spirit of Innovation Awards luncheon at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

Sherman & Reilly was established in 1927 as an engineering consulting firm that specialized in wire rope and cable applications.

Variable Technologies Dr. George Yu was in California today for meetings with investors. The Early innovator Award was accepted on his behalf by his wife, Dr. Mina Sartipi, a professor of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
