Fred’s shooter brought back to Fort Payne

A Fort Payne man accused of leaving one man paralyzed and another dependent on a cane after attempting to rob a local store is being brought back to Alabama.

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said in a news release that 45-year-old Kelly Jack Mayo was on the way from Polk County, Ga., where he was caught and arrested in October, charged with his second count of attempted armed robbery.

In DeKalb, he has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts discharge gun and first-degree robbery, said Harris.

Police believe Mayo, who was fired from a Fred’s store in Rome, Ga., may have been trying to get back at the company and he was also in financial trouble.

Police accuse Mayo of first trying to rob a Fred’s store in Rainsville, Ala., on Aug. 24. In that robbery, the store’s front door already had been locked when a man with a gun approached the door and shot through the glass, hitting two Fred’s employees in the spine.

The robber escaped.

In October, a man tried to rob a Cedartown Fred’s store, kidnapping a female employee with a gun to her head. Mayo was arrested after that incident when a police car rammed his car.
