Covenant, Sewanee women win openers

The Covenant College basketball teams had mixed results in their season openers Thursday night. The Lady Scots beat Hiwassee 70-46 at Covenant, but the Covenant men lost 59-50 at fellow NCAA Division III program Berry College.

Alexis Storteboom and Jessie Blankenship had 14 points apiece and 14 and 10 rebounds for the Lady Scots, who got 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists from Kiaira Cooper and 10 points each from Morgan Woodward and Haley Soles. Makayla Cordell and Dominique Stringer scored 13 and 12 points, Cordell with four steals, for Hiwassee (1-5), while Bethany Allen had nine rebounds and three steals.

Colton McGriff and Callum Sears led the Scots with 10 points each, while Lake Graham scored 13 and Jake Wright had 12 plus seven rebounds for Berry.

* Point 85, Tennessee Wesleyan 74: At Point, the team picked to finish last in the Appalachian Athletic Conference dropped the league favorites, who also are ranked 17th in NAIA Division II. Point is 7-2 overall; the Bulldogs are 0-4.

* Sewanee (w) 59, Welch 31: At Sewanee, the Tigers opened their season with a victory over the Nashville school as Paige Lowe and Dee Bradford scored 12 points each and Kayla Sewell had 12 rebounds and four blocked shots.

* Crown 66, Georgia Northwestern 49: At Rossville, the four-year school from Powell, Tenn., won behind 14 and 13 points from Collin Hickman and Nate Humphrey. Alex Miller had 12 for GNTC.

* Georgia Northwestern (w) 77, Oakwood 75: At Rome, the Lady Bobcats (3-3) won even with freshman standout Alyssa Nichelson out with illness, as Kierra Parks had 21 points and five steals and Keesha Wise hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds left and totaled 15 points and four steals.
