Swane Morris has resigned as Scottsboro High School's head football coach.

The Wildcats were 5-25 in three seasons with Morris as coach, including 2-8 this year, when they lost three games by 10 points or less.

"I appreciate all the effort Coach Morris gave during his time as head football coach," schools superintendent Dr. Judy Berry told the Scottsboro Daily Sentinel. "He has been a great role model for the kids. He did the very best that he could do."

Morris did not return phone calls.

He came to Scottsboro after a successful nine-year tenure at his alma mater, Gaston High. His career record now is 75-62.

Scottsboro hasn't made the playoffs since 2008, and its next coach will be the third in five seasons.

Northwest star to ETSU

Mykeah Johnson, a four-year softball starter for Georgia Class AAAA champion Northwest Whitfield, signed scholarship papers with East Tennessee State University as part of national signing week.

Johnson, a third baseman for the Lady Bruins, also played for the Tennessee Fury. She played through injuries sustained in an automobile accident in May, never missing playing time for Northwest.

"Mykeah wasn't really healthy until the last couple of weeks, but she never used it as an excuse," coach Jason Brooker said. "She didn't have the season she would have wanted, but just her leadership alone was invaluable. She had a great career here, and she always was the type of hitter you wanted up in pressure situations."

Johnson, who also had offers from Georgia Southern, Shorter, Alabama State and North Carolina A&T, batted .544 with four homers, 20 doubles and 36 RBIs as a junior for the Lady Bruins.

Daniels progressing

Former Red Bank football coach Tim Daniels continues on the road to recovery from open-heart surgery earlier in the fall. Daniels had planned to work as the offensive-line coach at Baylor, but those plans were cut short by the heart problem.

He has been to three rehab treatments so far but said he planned to return to his classroom at Red Bank following the Christmas break.
