Sewanee freshman linebacker Brandon Campbell was announced Monday as the Southern Athletic Association's first football newcomer of the year, and sophomore offensive lineman Brandon Miller was voted to the All-SAA first team. The Tigers' Tanner Potts, Murphy Walters, Quentin Jones and Campbell were second-team choices, and John Philip Boudreaux, Jase Brooks and Sergio Acosta earned honorable mention. The 6-foot-5, 314-pound Miller, who's from Tullahoma, joined Potts in blocking for the Tigers' 269-yard rushing average per game. Walters was second-team in 2011 in most of the SAA teams' former conference and led the SAA with four interceptions; Jones had two.

Golf

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Steven Fox is in a six-way tie for seventh place at 5-under-par 137 after Monday's two rounds in the Western Refining All-America Golf Classic at the El Paso (Texas) Country Club. In the competition for the 2011-12 NCAA Division I golf All-Americans and the Division II player of the year, Cory Whitsett of Alabama and Kevin Penner of UNLV share a three-stroke lead at 131. Fox is in the field as the U.S. Amateur champion. One 18-hole round remains today.

Basketball

• Tennessee Temple and Bryan College split a basketball doubleheader Monday evening at Dayton, Bryan's Lady Lions winning 71-60 before the visiting Crusaders prevailed 81-63. Morgan Burnette had 18 points, nine rebounds and six steals for the Lady Lions (5-1), while Ashley Davis scored 15 points with five 3-point baskets, Rachel Calfee sank 13 points, Keila Formont had 11 points and five assists and Kelsey Brooks added six assists and three steals. Amanda Rector led the Lady Crusaders (0-6) with 15 points, Lynncoya Gardner and Tia Watts scored 10 each and Amber Charles contributed five steals and five assists. Weedlens Beauvil was 5-of-8 on 3s and scored 20 points for the Crusaders (4-3), while Rashaud Bell and Hampton Mack scored 16 and 15 points and John Jones grabbed nine rebounds. Brandon Cole had 17 points and nine rebounds and Tim Fortenberry also scored 17 points for Bryan (2-5), while Rafael Tyler had 10 points and five assists.

• A last-second 51-foot shot from their 2012 all-region player, Alex Miller, gave the Georgia Northwestern Bobcats a 66-63 win over the visiting Sewanee junior varsity in basketball Monday night at the Rossville Athletic Center. The Bobcats (2-4) trailed by eight points with four minutes to go but fought back to lead by two when Miller missed two free throws with 10 seconds left but Hunter Ivester was fouled on the rebound and made one of two. Sewanee's Bryan Beviacqua was fouled at 1.5 seconds and made both to tie the game at 63, but Miller scored on what GNTC coach David Stephenson described as the "fourth option" on the inbounds play out of a timeout. Ivester led all players with 17 points and five steals, while Miller had 12 points and Bud Todd added 11. Leo Born and Byron Turner topped the Tigers with 14 and 12.

Volleyball

• The NAIA national volleyball tournament schedule at Sioux City, Iowa, was finalized after Saturday's opening-round matches at campus sites, and Lee University (28-9) -- one of the 12 teams with opening-round byes -- will face Missouri Baptist (34-3) in pool play on Nov. 27, Lindsey Wilson (29-12) on Nov. 28 and Biola (27-4) on Nov. 29, all at 3:15 p.m. CST. Biola was ranked fourth in the final season poll, with Lee ninth and Missouri Baptist 17th. There are six pools, and that group comprises Pool D. The top two teams from each pool will advance to single-elimination championship play on Nov. 30. The championship match is set for 9 p.m. EST on Dec. 1.

Auto Racing

• Johnny Lewis of Ringgold won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. The second-year driver at the strip won in a 2010 Mazda RX7 with a 6.32-second run on a 6.32 dial, leaving Jim Brackett of Etowah second with a 5.94 run on a 5.97 dial in his 1998 Ford Mustang GT. Chad Crane was third with Jason Young fourth. Creaper Griep of East Ridge won the Foot Brake class with a 7.40 run on a 7.36 dial in a '77 Camaro. Ray Zumhar of Harrison was second with a 7.32 on a 7.30 in a '71 Dodge Demon. Craig Cash of East Ridge had the low elapsed time and top speed of the meet, 4.85 seconds and 132.25 mph, in a '63 Corvette built by his father, strip Hall of Famer Johnny Cash.
