Diabetes

Diabetes basics and diet classes are designed to provide an overview of diabetes, treatment, prevention of complications, meal planning and carbohydrate counting. It's set for 8:45 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday at Memorial Hospital Hixson and from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at Memorial Hospital. There is also a Diabetes Self-Management Program from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at Memorial Hospital. Memorial's Diabetes and Nutrition Center can help obtain a physician's referral and provide cost information. Registration is required. Call 495-7970.

Foster/adoptive parents classes

Centerstone, a nonprofit provider of community-based mental health and addiction services, announces the Parents as Tender Healers classes, required by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services for all potential foster and adoptive parents in Tennessee. The 12-class certification course is scheduled Thursday evenings from Nov. 29 to Feb. 29, running 6-9 p.m. through Feb. 14 and 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. Weight-loss surgery

• Free Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Seminar is set for 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Erlanger East on Gunbarrel Road. Those who are overweight and/or with health problems related to obesity can learn about the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center at Erlanger. • Chattanooga Bariatrics will hold a free seminar on gastric banding -- Lap-Band and Realize Band -- and the new sleeve procedure for people who 75 pounds or more overweight. The seminar is set for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Chattanooga Bariatrics, 7405 Shallowford Road, Suite 160. Call 899-1000 for reservations. Free insurance verification will be provided.

Autism workshop

A free autism workshop is set for 6-8 p.m. Dec. 6 in the Chattanooga Autism Center, 1400 McCallie Ave., Suite 100. The topic is "Comparing ABA Therapy and Behavior Therapy." Breast-feeding class

Parkridge East Hospital's breast-feeding class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6 is designed for first-time moms and veteran parents. Topics include the physiology of breast-feeding, advantages, successful techniques, returning to work and pumping. A support person is encouraged to attend but is not required. Yoga

ClearSpring Yoga at 107 N. Market St. presents two "Sound as Therapy" classes Dec. 7-8, with musician/sound healer Thomas Anderson and energy movement healer Elisabeth Sunshine. On Dec. 7, the pair holds a "Healing Through Sound" class from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Cost is $30. On Dec. 8, they host a Sound Therapy Workshop from 3 to 5:30 p.m., with a cost of $35.
