Lee announces Strube, two female golf signees

Friday, January 1, 1904

Lee University golf coach John Maupin announced this week two signees for his women's team and Matt Strube from Briarcrest Christian School in Germantown, Tenn., as a men's signee. The new Lady Flames are Sarah Robertson from Grissom High in Huntsville, Ala., and Sam Burrus from Franklin Road Academy in Nashville. Maupin said Strube "is an all-around great fit for the school and team ... very prepared for the rigors of both, academics and top-level college golf." The coach said Strube "has played in probably more tournaments over the past year than any other player in the state" and "has several rounds of 68 or better in tournament play. Matt is a very good ball striker, and his distance off the tee is an advantage." Strube finished fifth in the TSSAA state last fall and was on the winning West team in the inaugural Tennessee Junior Cup. He has won four U.S. Junior Golf Tour events and, by three strokes, a Future Collegiate World Tour tournament at TPC Sawgrass. Robertson was fourth in her 2012 high school state tourney and won two high school invitationals and a Southeastern Junior Golf Tour event at Terrapin Hills, and she considered several NCAA Division I programs. "We are getting one of the top female junior golfers in the state of Alabama," Maupin said. "She has played a great tournament schedule over the last few years, and her success in those events really stuck out to us." Burrus also had Division I interest and was all-state in Tennessee as a junior and shot a 73 in the region tournament as a senior. "Her game will translate very well to the college level, and we think she can come in and have an immediate impact on our program," Maupin said, noting her length off the tee and competitive nature. "She is such a well-rounded young lady, and you can tell that she takes pride in everything that she does."

Basketball

• Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School scored 19 points with 4-of-6 3-point shooting and made a game-high four steals as Carson-Newman College improved to 4-0 in men's basketball this season with a 93-60 home win Wednesday night against Hiwassee. Justin Browner had 17 points and seven assists for Hiwassee (2-7). Joel Bailey and Rico Stanley scored nine points apiece for the Tigers.

Swimming

• The Sewanee women's swimming and diving team is ranked 17th in NCAA Division III, according to Collegeswim.com. The poll is based on a computerized points system, and the Sewanee men are just outside the top 25. From fall-semester meets, the Tigers lead the Southern Athletic Association in 12 women's events and 15 men's.
