Body found by the water

Chattanooga police are investigating after a female body was found in the woods early Sunday morning.

A resident called the Chattanooga Police Department at 8:32 a.m. reporting a possible human body by the water near 3700 Youngstown Road.

The body had not been identified as of Sunday night, and police had released no information on the cause or the time of death.

Anyone with information is asked to call Chattanooga police at 423-698-2525.

2 wildfires keep firefighters busy

Firefighters from Chattanooga and the Tennessee Forestry Division fought a 15-acre brush fire Sunday night on Aetna Mountain near the Raccoon Mountain Campground.

Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said the fire started around 6 p.m. No structures were endangered, he said, and no one had been injured during the evening, but firefighters had not contained the blaze late Sunday night.

Earlier Sunday, firefighters battled a fire outside Soddy-Daisy for several hours, slowed by heavy winds and steep terrain.

Dusten Woodard, assistant chief of the Mowbray Fire Department, said the fire started about 11:30 a.m. after a homeowner emptied fireplace ashes at the edge of the woods.

The fire was about 100 feet long and 200 feet wide when first responders arrived at 9807 Indian Ridge Lane, he said.

About 20 men from the Sequoyah, Mowbray and Dallas Bay fire departments fought the blaze, he said, and contained it after it burned about an acre and a half.
