"King College will be a great fit for Blaike," Soddy-Daisy coach Jim Higgins said. "Blaike and his parents put a lot of thought into this decision, and they're confident that this will be a great environment for him to pursue his academic and athletic goals."
Henry has a 3.8 grade point average and three state-tournament medals.
"They're getting a premier student-athlete," Higgins added.
Cardwell in boot
Boyd-Buchanan quarterback Jim Cardwell, injured in the Class 2A semifinal loss at Friendship Christian a week ago, will be on crutches and wearing a boot for the next six weeks but should be ready for baseball season.
The original concern was that the junior had suffered a broken ankle. He has torn ligaments.
Jackson has surgery
Logan Jackson, the East Hamilton running back who was injured in the Hurricanes' opening game of the Class 4A playoffs, underwent surgery last Wednesday to repair a torn ACL. He'll be on crutches for four to six weeks but has already begun rehab, according to coach Ted Gatewood.
Duncan at Shorter
T.J. Duncan, the first five-time state wrestling champion in TSSAA history, has transferred from Maryland to Shorter.
The McCallie graduate has wrestled in the 157- and 165-pound weight classes and has a 9-1 record.
"I think the biggest thing was that he wanted to be closer to home and family," McCallie coach Mike Newman said. "He has a previous relationship with coaches at Shorter, so it was a good fit at a good school."
Irish seek coach
Tyler Baldanado recently resigned as Notre Dame's volleyball coach. She spent two years guiding the Lady Irish, who despite ending up 13-19 advanced as far as a Class AA state sectional for the second consecutive season.
They came from the No. 3 seeding in the District 7 tournament this year and won it. Then they won their Region 4 semifinal, qualifying them for a sectional.
"She helped the team peak at the end of the year, and they ended up winning the district," Notre Dame athletic director Howie Sompayrac said of Baldanado. "We think the new coach who inherits the program will have a great opportunity to build a team around some core upperclassmen, but way more of the team members are really young."
