Lucky for GPS, not all dreams come true.
If that were the case, Izzy Phillips wouldn't have had the success she had in the most crucial moment of the Bruisers' soccer match Tuesday against chief rival Baylor. And if that were the case, the Bruisers wouldn't be celebrating a win they hadn't had in six seasons.
But luckily for GPS, not all dreams come true.
Moments after Baylor had tied the score, Phillips took a long lead pass from Josie Love Roebuck and was able to chip the ball over the head of keeper Analiese Smith. The goal was the difference in the fourth-ranked Bruisers' 2-1 Division II-AA East/Middle Region victory -- Baylor's first loss to a local opponent since Oct. 5, 2006, a 1-0 defeat by GPS.
Phillips had a dream Monday night that in the same situation she missed the shot.
"This is a big win for us. I can't put it into words," she said. "We've watched other GPS teams not be able to pull it off. We've had so much team unity this year, and after they scored, we huddled together and decided it wasn't over yet.
"It's an amazing feeling to be able to put in the winning goal."
Akia Harris gave the Bruisers (10-1-1, 4-0-1) their first one-goal advantage when she punched in a rebound of a Keyle Snyder shot, initially saved by Smith.
Down a goal at halftime, Baylor started to attack in waves. The Lady Red Raiders tied it with about eight minutes remaining when Marci Carter nailed a free kick that keeper Savannah Williams couldn't handle.
Phillips answered moments later and the Bruisers held on.
"We're ready to take the program a step up from where we've been," GPS coach Leland Strang said. "It was a physically and emotionally charged match that came down to the wire.
"Our team just supports one another, and that was key on a night like this."
Fifth-ranked Baylor fell to 8-3-1 overall and 2-2 in region play.
"We didn't have a single bounce go our way tonight," Baylor coach Jimmy Weekley said. "We weren't sharp, but with all of the injuries we've had, we did a good job.
"I told the girls that our season isn't based on GPS -- it's about competing for a state championship. Based on the way they celebrated their win tonight, their season seems to be based on beating us. We're just going to move forward."
