Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park announces four upcoming special events, beginning Saturday and continuing on Wednesday and Oct. 13.

• On Saturday at 9:30 a.m., a free walking tour will discuss the Cherokee removal and Civil War history of Browns Ferry crossing on the Tennessee River. Historian Jim Ogden will lead this two-hour, 2.5-mile walk, which departs from the parking area of Chattanooga Bakery, 900 Manufacturers Road.

The tour will follow the corridor (but not always the exact alignment) of one of the branches of the Federal Road, move across ground where a party in the Cherokee removal traveled, look at the site of a longtime important ferry over the Tennessee, and learn about the daring seizure of that same point to save an army from being starved into submission during the Civil War.

• On Saturday at 2 p.m., a one-hour program will be held at Chickamauga Battlefield in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Corinth, Miss., campaign of autumn 1862.

Join a park ranger to discuss the difficulties that erupted between Generals Ulysses S. Grant and William Rosecrans during that pivotal campaign. The strain between the two men led to dire consequences for one of them a year later during the Chattanooga campaign.

The program begins at the Battlefield's Visitor Center and will car caravan to Rosecrans' headquarters. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

• Hike to a Civil War fortification on Wednesday at 5 p.m. with Jim Ogden. The 90-minute, 1.5-mile walk will explore the Civil War Union artillery earthwork complex on the southern end of Stringer's Ridge on Moccasin Bend.

The walk will begin near the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute entrance on Moccasin Bend Road. Special Event signs will direct participants to the parking area.

Cannons in these positions helped keep Confederates at bay during the Siege of Chattanooga 149 years ago and then helped drive them from Lookout Mountain during the "Battle Above the Clouds" in November 1863.

• A free ranger-guided walking program will be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1:30 p.m. as part of RiverRocks Festival.

Participants should meet at the Friends of Moccasin Bend tent near Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River Street, in Coolidge Park for the 2.5-hour walking tour.

The tour will discuss what Market street and downtown Chattanooga was like during the Civil War. Anyone with an interest in the city during the Union Army's stay or the city's history in general is encouraged to attend.

For all walking programs, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, clothing appropriate for the weather and bring a water bottle.
