Interstate 75 lane closed today
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - The left lane of northbound Interstate 75 between exits 326 (U.S. Highway 41) and 328 (Carbondale Road) in Whitfield County will be closed today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for guardrail repairs.
The Georgia Department of Transportation advises motorists to slow down and use extra caution around work crews.
Pain clinic owner convicted
KNOXVILLE - The owner of a Maryville, Tenn., pain clinic has been convicted on federal charges of conspiracy, drug charges and money laundering.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported the guilty verdict was returned Thursday morning, but defendant Tamaral "Tammy" Guzman wasn't in the courtroom to hear it. Guzman had jumped bond.
U.S. District Court Judge Tom Varlan issued a warrant for her arrest and ordered that her trial would continue in absentia.
The jury found Guzman guilty on all 56 counts against her in connection with her now-closed Maryville Pain Management Consultants clinic.
Eatery with R.E.M. ties gets support
ATHENS, Ga. - Long lines of customers have been forming at a Georgia restaurant that inspired the name of rock band R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People" album.
Owner Dexter Weaver said he's grateful for the outpouring of support for Weaver D's Delicious Fine Foods after he had trouble paying his bills. At times, lines of customers have stretched out the door of the soul food restaurant.
A utility employee showed up last week to cut off the gas to the restaurant, Weaver said. He paid what he could, and the business has remained open.
Deer hunt canceled
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - A scheduled deer hunt at Oak Ridge has been canceled after an intrusion at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said Thursday it was informed by the U.S. Department of Energy that the Oct. 20-21 hunt at the Oak Ridge Wildlife Management Area was canceled as security at the plant is reviewed.
The security contractor at Y-12 was fired after three protesters vandalized a building July 28.
TWRA said it would notify affected hunters by mail and will refund fees paid for the hunt.
