Passmore a Socon player of month

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior libero Paula Passmore was chosen the Southern Conference volleyball defensive player of the month for September. Passmore had a career-best 42 digs in the last match of the month and has a conference-high 432, with the NCAA's third-highest average of 6.35 per set. Also in September, she passed Kari Krouse and Kylie Hunter into second place in UTC career digs, and the only former Moc ahead of her happens to be the all-time NCAA leader, Lara Newberry, her predecessor. UTC plays tonight at Elon and Saturday night at UNC Greensboro.

• Irene Ojukwu had 13 kills, six aces and seven digs as the Lee University volleyball team, ranked fifth in the NAIA, won 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 at Faulkner on Thursday. Paula Martin added nine kills on .412 hitting and Camil Martinez was credited with 22 assists for Lee (15-6), while Libby Peigen made 15 digs.

• Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had a season-high seven aces with 24 assists and Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had a match-high 10 kills as Carson-Newman won 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 in volleyball Thursday night at Milligan College.

• Tennessee Wesleyan lost a home volleyball match Thursday to Virginia Intermont, 3-0, dropping the Lady Bulldogs to 4-8 overall, 1-7 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Intermont is 11-7, 6-3.

Golf

• UTC's Steven Fox shot a solid 1-under-par 71 Thursday as the World Amateur Team Championship golf tournament in Antalya, Turkey, but his score didn't even count as his two teammates shot 64 and 67 to give the United States the lead in the 72-country field. Chris Williams and Justin Thomas, No. 1 and 3 in the World Amateur rankings, shot 64 and 67. Fox, who beat Williams for the 2012 U.S. Amateur championship, is ranked 19th. "Today went all right," Fox was quoted in a UTC release. "I hit it well, just didn't make many putts. Just hit a lot of edges all day. I'm ready for tomorrow, though."

• Fox's UTC teammates start play today in the Brickyard Collegiate Classic at the Riverside course in Macon, Ga. Juniors Davis Bunn, Chris Robb and Benni Weilguni, sophomore Liam Johnston and freshman Michael Monroe will be the Mocs taking part. The 54-hole tournament includes 15 teams from the East Coast to Colorado, including defending champion Georgia Tech.

• David Noll Jr. from Dalton was one of two co-medalists with 67s Thursday in the 18-hole qualifying round for the 94th annual Atlanta Match Play Championship at Rivermont Golf and Country Club at Johns Creek, Ga. Defending champion Brandon Nelson of Roswell is set as the top seed, and Noll is seeded third and tees off against 30th seed Danny Whigham of Atlanta at 9:18 this morning. Whigham was one of 11 players shooting 76s Thursday, but only three got into match play.

• Senior Heidi Steger from Ooltewah scored the goal for King College in a 2-1 soccer loss Thursday to visiting Belmont Abbey.
