Atlanta Catholics ending support for Komen charity

ATLANTA - Roman Catholic organizations in the Atlanta region have been told to end their support for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure cancer charity.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has criticized some Komen affiliates because they give money to Planned Parenthood to fund breast cancer screenings.

That's not the case in Atlanta. The local Komen affiliate told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it has never given funding to support Planned Parenthood Southeast. Komen officials said any decrease in funding impacts its ability to serve women.

Catholic officials said social media postings by the Komen affiliate in Atlanta made church officials think local members of the cancer charity were working behind the scenes to overturn a now-dropped ban on funding to Planned Parenthood.
