Ex-Dade coach Durden's son dies

Devin Durden, the 21-year-old son of former Dade County High School girls' basketball coach Gene Durden, died early Thursday morning from multiple injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident in Gwinnett County a week ago. Devin Durden, who helped lead Buford High School to three Class AA championships before playing football for the Air Force Academy, was visiting his family when the accident occurred. Gene Durden has been the girls' basketball coach at Buford for the past seven years, and his teams have won three state championships. He coached at Dade for 14 seasons and took the Lady Wolverines to the state tournament 13 times with three runner-up finishes. His son underwent numerous surgeries at Gwinnett Medical Center after the accident but never regained complete consciousness. The news hit hard in Trenton, where Devin was born. "The Durdens were a prominent, positive part of Dade County for many years," said Carissa Henry, a former player and current media specialist for Dade County High. "Their presence here left a lasting impression and we, as a community, still consider them to be part of our family. There are many heavy hearts in Trenton. With the passing of Devin Durden, we feel as though we have lost one of our own."
