The intersection of North Ocoee Street and 25th Street in Cleveland, Tenn., is scheduled for new turn lanes, according to TDOT.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Cleveland City Council faces several transportation-related votes when it convenes today.

At the 1 p.m. work session, council members are scheduled to hear a Tennessee Department of Transportation proposal to rework the busy intersection at 25th and Ocoee streets.

The city and state, along with property owners, have been discussing how to widen the intersection for months now. Property owners are concerned about the original plan's needed rights-of-way and city officials questioned the local cost. TDOT is expected to be back today with a scaled-down version of the plan.

The city staff recommendation is to deny TDOT's amended proposal "due to lack of funding,'' according to the agenda for the 3 p.m. voting session.

Not far from the Ocoee and 25th intersection, Spring Creek Town Center developers are asking for a new right-in and right-out entrance and exit onto 25th Street. The request includes a new retail center building and parking lot for the development as well.

"The owner has also agreed to donate a greenway easement that will connect the existing Fillauer Branch of the greenway under 25th/APD-40 to Elm Drive NE,'' according to the request by Stan Lawson.

The council is also voting on amendments to existing transportation planning contracts on behalf of the Cleveland Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Created when the area became a federally recognized metropolitan area, the MPO, which includes representatives from the city, Bradley County, Southeast Tennessee Development Agency and the governor's office, is responsible for transportation planning in the metro area.
