Lookout Valley coach Tony Webb took a hard look at the scoreboard hovering over the Silverdale Baptist Academy football facility and just shook his head.
"If you had told me before the game we would hold them to 24 points, I would have felt really good about our chances," Webb said with the knowledge that his Yellow Jackets were averaging more than 30 points a game.
Instead, Friday was a historic evening for the Silverdale Seahawks, who looked impressive in all facets in beating the Jackets 24-0 to secure their first-ever eight-win season.
"We play as a unit, but I have to give credit to our defense tonight," Silverdale coach Al Rogers said. "There were times where it looked like we had two offenses out there."
The Seahawks (8-1) forced six turnovers and turned Lookout Valley away inside the 5 late in the game on downs to preserve the shutout in what Rogers described as best game his young team has played this season.
"I'm sitting here right now and don't feel comfortable, and the game is over," Rogers said. "They had me worried to death, but Coach [Tim] Couch had a great defensive plan for them, and it showed. To shut out a team like Lookout Valley is impressive."
The Jackets (5-4) threw two interceptions in the end zone and set up two other scores with fumbles as Silverdale made its own breaks. Lookout Valley's Vann Scribner had thrown only one interception previously this season but thrice found guys in green.
Lincoln Phillips' sack and forced fumble set up Silverdale for its first TD just before halftime when Colton Rogers recovered the miscue at the 16. Phillips scored from 8 yards out two plays later, and the Seahawks led 10-0. The Jackets drove to the 5, but Joshua Rogers intercepted in the end zone to keep it 10-0 at the break.
Silverdale immediately forced a fumble to open the second half, and Matt McCulley took it from 4 yards away to make it 17-0 midway through the third period. Lookout Valley had a 22-play drive that ended inside the SBA 5, and Joshua Rogers broke off a 60-yard run to set up Spencer Mossburg's 9-yard pass to Tristan Huggins for the final score.
Rogers had 153 rushing yards on 11 carries and Phillips added 66 on 12 carries. Aubrey Shamblin forced a fumble and created havoc all night long while Mossburg, Phillips, Kendall Shoemaker and Phillips were ferocious defensively.
Lookout Valley got 116 rushing yards from Jamal Jones before cramps ended his night in the third quarter.
"It just wasn't our night," Webb said.
The Seahawks will take next week off before closing out the regular season at rival Grace Academy. Lookout Valley hosts state-ranked Copper Basin with serious playoff implications on the line for the Jackets.
