Grace Keith of Chattanooga received the J. Neal Ensminger Distinguished Alumnus Award during Tennessee Wesleyan College's homecoming festivities last weekend in Athens, and longtime TWC coach, teacher and administrator Stan Harrison got the Robbie J. Ensminger Friend of Wesleyan Award. Athens resident and Riceville native Jamison Sliger, who heads the Boys & Girls Club of Monroe County, got the Outstanding Young Alumnus honor, and longtime area high school coach David Tucker, former soccer standouts Donald Schaefer and Michael Gilbert, baseball catcher Tom Griffin and basketball standout David Scott were Hall of Fame inductees. Keith, a graduate of Sale Creek High School, which now gives an award of excellence in her name to a boy and a girl each year, had a 206-92 record as Hixson's girls' basketball coach from 1959 to '72 and then was UTC's first women's coach (1974-76) under Title IX and directed the Lady Mocs to an AIAW regional tournament in her second season. A board member of the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, she was the first inductee in the Chattanooga Volleyball Officials Association Hall of Fame and the first female inductee in the TWC hall. Harrison had more than 500 wins as TWC's women's basketball coach and also has served as golf coach, athletic director, dean of students, vice president and even interim president.

Soccer

• The Tennessee Wesleyan soccer teams won and tied an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at Union College in Barbourville, Ky. Abby Fannin, who was the AAC women's offensive player of the week after her two goals in one game and two assists in the other last week, had two goals and assisted a goal by Madelyn Thomas in a 3-1 victory. The men's match ended 1-1 after two overtimes. The Bulldogs' John Carrier was the AAC offensive player of the week, giving TWC that honor for the fourth time in six weeks. Bryan College players were selected the other two times, and Bryan's Jordan Devlin was the third consecutive Lion and the fourth in five weeks to be the AAC defensive honoree, with a TWC player the only interruption.

Golf

• Led by a closing 67 from medalist Alastair Tidcombe, the University of the Cumberlands overtook Lee University in the final round Tuesday and won the 13-team Wilmington Island Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at Savannah, Ga., by one shot, 858 to the Flames' 859. Former Walker Valley standout Hunter Vest was all-tournament for Lee with a third-place 2-under-par 211, and teammates Peyton Sliger and Matt Emery tied for seventh and 11th at 215 and 218 with JB Eksteen sharing 22nd place at 221. Heritage High graduate Hunter Cornelius was 10th at 217 and the No. 2 finisher for third-place Coastal Georgia.

Volleyball

• The Tennessee Wesleyan volleyball team lost at Berea on Wednesday with the Lady Mountaineers winning 25-18, 25-22, 14-25, 17-25, 15-13, one night after pushing third-place Union but falling 25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-10 in an AAC match. Hayli Raines had 11 kills and 20 digs and Ashley Reed and Amy Lokker added nine kills apiece against Union for TWC, while Chassity Taylor and Olivia Holden had 17 assists each and Amber Taylor and Carly Lenhardt made 12 and 11 digs.

• Because Boyd-Buchanan's main gym is hosting a middle school play, the Lady Bucs will play Jackson County in a Class A high school volleyball state sectional tonight at Arts & Sciences. Coach Ashley Rose said there were floor problems in Boyd-Buchanan's middle school gym, so a first call was made to Silverdale Baptist Academy, but it wasn't available. Rose's husband, Cole, then called fellow District 5 boys' basketball coach and CSAS athletic director Mark Dragoo. "Coach Dragoo said he didn't have anything going one so he said we could play there," the Lady Bucs' coach said. "It will be our home away from home." The other sectionals, scheduled at 7 p.m. local time of the host school, involving teams from the Chattanooga area are Sale Creek at Friendship Christian in Class A; Notre Dame at East Hamilton and Red Bank at Signal Mountain in Class AA; and Bradley Central at Columbia Central and Siegel at Ooltewah in Class AAA. On Saturday in Division II-AA state quarterfinals, GPS plays at St. Agnes at 1 EDT and Baylor hosts Brentwood Academy at 5.
