Milligan defeats first-place Bryan

Milligan College tightened up the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer standings Saturday night by scoring three late-second-half goals and winning 3-1 at previously first-place Bryan.

Milligan, 8-4 overall, improved to 6-1 in the league while knocking the NAIA's 15th-ranked Lions (10-3-1) to 6-1-1, same as Tennessee Wesleyan.

Bryan's Nathan Adams opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, but Nimely Robertson equalized in the 77th with an assist from Nahom Tekle, who put the Buffaloes ahead less than four minutes later. Joel Martin made it 3-1 in the final minute.

The Lions outshot the visitors 19-10 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks, but Dan Ball made five saves for Milligan. Josh Oldroyd had four for Bryan.

The Milligan women stayed tied for first place with Montreat by downing the Lady Lions 2-0 on an early goal by Jacklyn Orange and a late score by Raelyn Hunt. Stephanie Gagnon made 16 saves for Bryan (3-11-1, 2-6-1), which was outshot 21-4 with a 9-1 disadvantage in corner kicks.

• Southern Wesleyan 2, Lee 1: At Cleveland, all the scoring was in the first half as the visitors improved to 12-2-1 overall, 7-2-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference with two goals by Raphael Fernandes. Cedric Beauzile scored for Lee (7-7-1, 3-6) from a double assist by Sias Reyneke and Jonathan Finlay, and Chase Kenny made 10 saves.

• Lee (w) 4, Southern Wesleyan 0: The NAIA's second-ranked Lady Flames rose to 9-0 in the SSAC with first-half goals by Christina Bovbjerg, Ode Fulutudilu and Chloe Woody on two assists by Ashley Aragona and one by Caroline Scales and a Woody-aided Debbie Rogers score at 63:08. Lee (12-1-1) outshot SWU (5-9-1, 1-8-1) 28-2 and had a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.

• Covenant (w) 4, Wesleyan, Ga., 0: At Covenant, Katelyn Newsome and Mo Cross scored in the first 15 minutes and Mae Mae Johnson and Ruth Terry added second-half goals for the Lady Scots in the Great South Athletic Conference match. Hannah Weichbrodt and Kara Lee had an assist apiece for Covenant (12-3-1, 7-1), which outshot winless Wesleyan 33-0 and had an 18-0 margin in corner kicks. Abby Stephens made 14 saves in defeat.

• Tennessee Wesleyan 3, Cumberlands 2: At Williamsburg, Ky., Luke Winter, Brent Lesnick and Sam Clare scored second-half goals to lift the Bulldogs to the nonconference win. Clark Lydon had five saves for Wesleyan (9-3-3).

• Martin Methodist (w) 1, Tennessee Wesleyan 0: At Athens, Tenn., the 14th-ranked visitors prevailed on Jennifer Loewen's goal at 73:12. Martin Methodist outshot the Lady Bulldogs (9-7) 14-4 and had a 10-1 advantage in corners. Jaimee Moreland made five saves in defeat.

• Bob Jones (w) 2, Tennessee Temple 0: At Greenville, S.C., the Lady Crusaders fell to 6-10-1. The schedule men's game was postponed because of too many injuries for Temple.
