Chattanooga Mocs' Steven Fox picked for new U.S. team

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox and the University of Washington's Chris Williams, the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, are the male representatives for the United States team in the 2013 Copa de las Americas tournament Jan. 3-6 at Doral Resort and Spa in Miami. Both were in the winning three-man U.S. contingent for the recent World Amateur Team Championship involving 72 nations. They will be joined in Miami by two women's players, Duke senior Lindy Duncan and UCLA sophomore Erynne Lee. "These four players are to be congratulated for being named to the USA teams and for outstanding achievements throughout their careers," said USA team captain Jim Williams, an USGA executive committee member. The Copa de las Americas is an amateur tournament for countries in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. It includes three 72-hole competitions: men's, women's and overall.

• Dalton resident David Noll Jr. again won his match Monday for the amateur team in Georgia's Billy Peters Cup Matches against a team of the state's PGA section, but again it was not enough as the professionals completed a 16-8 win over the GSGA squad at Capital City Club-Brookhaven in Atlanta. Noll, the GSGA's men's player of the year seven of the last nine, is 8-2-2 in the last six Peters Cup events. He beat David Potts 2 and 1 on Monday.

• Covenant College sophomore Trey Patterson is in third place, two strokes out of the lead, after tying the school record with a 4-under-par 68 Monday in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association national golf tournament at Panama City Beach, Fla. Oklahoma Christian's Vilhelm Bogstrand is the leader. Covenant's other participant, freshman Levi Nix, opened with a 78 and is tied for 48th out of 96 golfers.

Volleyball

• UTC senior Paula Passmore again was chosen the Southern Conference volleyball defensive player of the week, and teammate Briana Reid was the freshman of the week after the Mocs beat Davidson before losing to South Division leader Georgia Southern. Passmore had 48 digs in the two matches and continues to lead the league in digs, and Reid totaled 25 kills and 19 digs. UTC (10-15, 4-4) is in fourth place in the SoCon North, one game out of second.

Auto Racing

• Trenton, Ga., mechanic Jeremiah Powell won the Super Pro class and $1,500 at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip on Saturday. The son of former strip champion Rocky Powell won with a 5.37-second run on a 5.37 dial in his new 527-cubic-inch dragster. Ronnie Kilgore was second with Wayne Richards third. Ringgold's Doug Frazier won the Foot Brake Class with a 10.89-second run on a 10.87 dial in his 1974 Oldsmobile station wagon; the 30-year-plus racer beat out 24 competitors with the oldest and slowest car in the class. Fellow Ringgold resident Marty Goldsmith was second with an 8.53 run on an 8.51 dial in a '73 Dodge Dart, and Mike Griep was third. Jamie Millhoos from Rossville won the motorcycle eliminations with Tom Rich of Kennesaw second, and Josh Hughes of Lenoir City was the Junior Dragster victor with Ryan Dennis second.

Soccer

• Emory University, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, won 3-0 at Covenant College in women's soccer Monday. Emory (11-0-4) scored all three goals in the first half, including scores by Kelly Costopoulos and Veronica Romero in the first four minutes. The Atlanta team won the shots count 18-5, and Hannah Bales made five saves for Covenant (12-4-1).

Running

• Lee University's Jessica Childers and Cayce Bryan finished eighth and ninth individually in leading the Lady Flames to a third-place team finish in the 10-school Southeast Classic cross country meet Saturday at Berea, Ky. Their times for the five-kilometer race were 19:29 and 19:35, and teammate Storie Miller was 17th in 20:19, a personal best by 17 seconds. Centre and Cumberlands were first and second.

Fishing

• Jeff Knight of Cleveland was eighth in the Walmart Bass Fishing League Regional this past weekend on Pickwick Lake. He totaled 37 pounds, 4 ounces with his 14 keepers in the three-day event, good for $650. J.R. Henard of Rogersville, Tenn., headed the six qualifiers for the BFL All-American with 47-3.
