Covenant College sophomore Trey Patterson remained in the running for a high finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association men's golf tournament with his 2-over-par 74 Tuesday at Panama City Beach, Fla. Added to his first-round 68, Patterson is tied for fourth, four strokes behind leader Vilhelm Bogstrand of Oklahoma Christian. Covenant's other entry in the event, freshman Levi Nix, shot an 80 and missed the cut. Patterson double-bogeyed hole No. 2 but birdied the eighth and made clutch birdies on 17 and 18.

• Avery George from Walker Valley High School led the Middle Tennessee State women's golf team to the championship of the 18-team Blue Raider Invitational concluded Tuesday at Old Fort Golf Club. George tied for second individually at 221 for 54 holes, four strokes behind the winner, and teammates Ashley Haggard and Olivia Love tied for fourth at 222. The MTSU men's team now is without junior Brett Patterson from McMinnville for the rest of the 2012-13 season. The two-time all-conference player and 2011 U.S. Open participant injured an elbow last week and will redshirt and have two years still to play.

Soccer

• Lee University senior midfielder Caroline Scales from Chattanooga was the Southern States Athletic Conference women's soccer defensive player of the week, and the Lady Flames moved up to No. 1 in the NAIA poll. Scales scored the tying goal in their 1-all tie with the top-ranked NCAA Division III team, when she also limited Emory's top scorer to one shot on goal, and she helped Lee hold Southern Wesleyan to two shots and none on goal Saturday. The Baylor School graduate went to Georgia Southern before transferring to Lee.

• Tennessee Wesleyan edged visiting Trevecca Nazarene 4-3 in overtime in men's soccer Tuesday in Athens, Tenn. Josh Simnett and Sam Clare scored late in the first half from assists by Luke Winter and John Carrier to give TWC (10-3-3) a 2-1 lead, and Carrier made it 3-2 before the Trojans tied it at 3. Laurence Hutchinson's goal at 104:44 won it for the Bulldogs, who got eight saves from Clark Lydon.

Volleyball

• Chelsea Breaden totaled 25 kills as the Bryan College volleyball team beat host Reinhardt 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Tuesday and then downed Southern Wesleyan 25-22, 25-23, 25-22. Kaylan Dilts had 11 kills with Breaden's 12 against SWU and reigning AAC player of the week Carolyn Evans had seven after making nine against Reinhardt for the Lady Lions (24-9, 12-2). Taylor Fink had 42 assists and 14 digs against Reinhardt and then 38 assists, and Corrie Walker totaled 34 digs while Madison Akins totaled 19.

• Irene Ojukwu made 16 kills on .538 hitting and Paula Martins added 11 on .450 as Lee University beat Faulkner 25-12, 25-9, 25-10 in SSAC volleyball Tuesday at Cleveland. Camil Martinez had 21 assists and Courtney Wilson had 12 for Lee (20-7, 11-1).

• Covenant College improved to 19-6 in volleyball, 9-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference, with a 25-10, 25-17, 25-9 win Tuesday against Spelman (1-16, 1-7). Chelsea Van Dyk had 10 kills and 10 digs for Covenant, while Cora Schroeder had eight kills, Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 26 assists and Estes Carlson had 20 digs.

Football

• Chester Lagod, a University of Chattanooga football star in the early 1950s who went on to play for the New York Giants, recently was inducted into the sports hall of fame in the town where he grew up -- St. Clairsville, Ohio. Lagod was a Little All-American tackle in 1951 and '52 and went into the UTC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. He lives in East Brainerd.

Rowing

• Joe Garner in men's single, twins Connor and Quinn Nash in men's pair, the Nashes with David May and Michael von Peters in men's quad and the women's quad boat of Susie Zeglen, Lauren Simpson, Gentry Whittaker and Raegan Johnson were gold-medal winners for Chattanooga Junior Rowing at the Hobbs Island Regatta in Huntsville, Ala., last Saturday. The women's quad winners plus coxswain Tanner Eaton earned a silver medal in women's four, as did Andi Cabrera in women's single, Matt Kneidler in men's single and another CJR women's quad crew of Aubrey Gardin, Sarah McDonald, Meghan Ray and Audrey Moorehead. CJR women's eight and novice women's four boats got bronze medals, and men's novice four and women's four teams finished fourth. Several CJR boats did not get to compete as the water got too dangerous in the afternoon.
