United Parcel Service, Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce and the Rev. Paul A. McDaniel were presented awards today at the Urban League's 30th anniversary celebration and Equal Opportunity Day Breakfast.
Jimmy Winton, manager of UPS in Chattanooga, accepted the Inclusion by Design Award for the company's support of diversity in the workforce.
Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tom Edd Wilson accepted the Community Impact Award for the Chamber's role in recruiting Volkswagen, Alstom and Amazon to Chattanooga.
And the crowd gave a standing ovation to McDaniel, pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church, who received the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award.
McDaniel, a retired county commissioner of 20 years, was recognized for winning a Supreme Court case that enabled him to be a member of the 1977 Tennessee Constitutional Convention, which established the County Commission form of government. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-0 that Tennessee could not prohibit members of the clergy from holding office.
