From disco roller girl glitz to the hitman twist, Oscar-nominated films "Boogie Nights" and "Pulp Fiction" offer up some of the most memorable scenes and characters from '90s cinema.

This weekend, local music collective The Communicators will perform renditions of each film's soundtrack during a two-night double feature at Rhythm & Brews. The band will perform "Boogie Nights" on Friday. "Pulp Fiction" will follow on Saturday.

The Communicators is a free-form ensemble formed around indie-rock trio Glowing Bordis, of which Susman is a member. For each show, the members of Bordis team up with local and regional guest collaborators, including members of Strung Like a Horse, Toneharm, The Nim Nims and Digital Butter.

After a year of performing shows focused on single albums, such as Beck's "Odelay" and The Beastie Boys' "Ill Communication," tackling two recordings at once has been decidedly more complicated, Susman said.

"It's a lot of music -- a lot of pretty complex music," he said. "A lot of people have been asking how we'll pull it off."

This weekend's show is the group's most involved to date, Susman said, adding that preparations began six weeks ago.

About 15 musicians will be involved between the two shows, including members of funk/soul outfit Smooth Dialects and Hudson K, a Knoxville-based electro-rock duo.

The venue will be decked out in appropriate trappings for each film, and the band members will be wearing film-appropriate costumes. Each concert also will include live actors, including members of Theater for the New South, who will re-enact some of the films' more iconic scenes.

On Friday, attendees to the "Boogie Nights" show will be able to take part in a costume contest. On Saturday, the concert will include a twist contest in homage to the "Pulp Fiction" dance sequence featuring John Travolta and Uma Thurman.

These additional elements have added to the complexity during the last six weeks of preparations, but the end result should be worth the effort, Susman said.

"We all realize this is very involved, and we want it to be," he said. "This Communicators thing has been so much fun for all of us to do, but we want to keep making it interesting and keep doing something that may not have ever been seen here before."
