The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga finally got some goals against NCAA Division I competition Friday night, producing a 2-2 deadlock through two overtime periods at Lipscomb.
Logan Higgans had a tying score after corraling a loose ball in the box in the 26th minute, and five minutes later the Mocs equalized at 2 when Becca Smith converted a Hannah Wyatt corner kick. The early flurry was it for scoring, as the Lady Bisons were left at 2-3-1 and the Mocs at 1-2-1.
UTC keeper Lauren Thomas made four saves in 110 minutes.
• Lee 2, Olivet Nazarene 0: At Cleveland in Lee's tournament, Sias Reyneke scored 7:14 into the game from a Sebastian Vallejo cross and assisted Josh Ball on a score four minutes into the second half. The Flames (2-1) outshot the Illinois team 10-4. Martin Methodist beat Montreat 4-0 with Juan Madrigal scoring twice and Jonathan Cabale adding a goal and an assist.
• Sewanee 3, Blackburn 1: The Tigers opened their season impressively with goals by Ford Emerson, Samuel Edoung-Biyo (assisted by Ford Rushton) and Ned Sprat while outshooting Blackburn 25-4 with a 10-1 dominance in corner kicks. The Beavers' Alex Miller netted a free kick with 16 seconds left.
• Messiah (w) 4, Covenant 0: At Grantham, Pa., the top-ranked and defending Division III national champions scored three goals in the first 36 minutes and ultimately outshot the Lady Scots (0-1) 25-0 with a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Hannah Bales made 11 saves in defeat.
• Messiah 3, Covenant 0: The third-ranked Falcons took 33 shots to six for the Scots, and Shuler Polk made 10 saves in his 72 minutes.
ETSU tops UTC 3-0
The East Tennessee State volleyball team improved to 5-1 for the season by beating UTC 25-10, 25-18, 2-21 on Friday in the Clemson Classic.
Freshman Sarah Batterton had eight kills and junior Bridget Camacho had 25 assists for the Mocs (3-1), while senior libero Paula Passmore made 19 digs. Bethany Gesell and Meredith Hardy had 12 and 11 kills and Megan Devine added 10 plus 19 digs for ETSU, and Jamie Rutledge had 32 asists. The Bucs were credited with 20 blocks, compared to six for UTC.
• At Irvine, Calif., the NAIA's third-ranked Lee team edged No. 24 Westmont 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 15-9 but lost 25-23, 25-22, 25-13 to No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) in the Asics/Wyndham Hotel Labor Day Classic. Paula Martins and Irena Ojukwu each had 10 kills, the latter also with 10 digs, against Concordia, when Camil Martinez had 27 assists and Libby Peigen made 16 digs. Marija Zelenovic had 22 kills and Ojukwu and Martins added 15 and 12 with five and four blocks in the five-setter, when Martinez set 56 assists.
• At Milligan, Bryan (4-3) beat Southeastern 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 and defeated Mobile 29-31, 25-16, 25-14, 25-11. Chelsea Breaden had 12 and 11 kills, Taylor Fink had 26 and 40 assists and Corrie Walker had 24 and 22 digs. Against Mobile, Makenzie Sindelar had nine kills and Kaylan Dilts had eight kills, two slo blocks and four block assists.
• At Nashville, Covenant College began its season by losing 25-13, 25-22, 25-19 to host Trevecca Nazarene and beating Martin Methodist 25-20, 26-24, 25-20. Freshman Chelsea Van Dyk had 11 kills, Cora Schroeder had nine kills and eight digs and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 24 assists and nine digs in the loss for the Lady Scots. Kirkpatrick had 39 assists and Van Dyke, Schroeder and Jessica Chittenden had 13, 10 and nine kills in the win, when Estes Carlson made 10 digs and Hannah Rogers had seven kills and eight digs.
• At Lebanon, Tenn., Tennessee Temple lost 25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-14 to host Cumberland University and 3-0 to Reinhardt in the Labor Day Volleydawg Classic. Kourtney Chorman had eight kills and 13 digs in the first match and 10 kills in the second, when Natasha dos Santos Ferreti had 14 assists and four aces after setting 13 assists against CU. Rachel Binkley totaled four blocks in the first defeat.
Sewanee wins opener
Sewanee opened its field hockey season with a 2-1 win Friday over visiting Washington & Lee.
The Generals scored first but the Tigers responded with first-half goals by Cameron Herndon and Anne Booke and held on with strong defense. W&L took 11 second-half shots to Sewanee's five, but goalie Anna Morrow was up to the challenge.
