Police: Suspect in Washington woods shooting dead

ARLINGTON, Wash. — A suspect was found dead Sunday after authorities say a shooter in woods north of Seattle fired at SWAT team and other police.

Officers were responding to reports that a man had been shot in the leg in his driveway.

Snohomish County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said late Sunday the male suspect was deceased and a weapon was recovered. No other details were immediately available.

Some nearby residents had been told to leave their homes as a precaution, and Ireton said authorities continued to search for a possible second suspect.

“At this point we’re still assuming there’s a second suspect. We are combing through property and buildings just to double-check before we start letting people back to their houses,” Ireton told The Associated Press.

The man who was shot in his driveway about 1:30 p.m. called authorities before he was taken to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

There were no reports of other injuries.

Officers understood someone was in the woods, shooting at vehicles or people, so they initiated a SWAT team call.

Resident Linda Purtteman, who was walking her dog in the area Sunday afternoon, told The Seattle Times (http://bit.ly/RBQNGm) that she heard gunshots, but initially was unfazed by them.

“I have a few neighbors who go shooting a lot out here, so I didn’t think anything of it,” she said.

But then, a neighbor told her shots had been fired at a SWAT team and people in the area were urged to stay indoors, she said.

Arlington is about 50 miles north of Seattle.
