Lee University's golf teams are both in second place after the first day of the Bill Sergent Invitational being hosted by the University of the Cumberlands at the Crooked Creek course in Kentucky. Lee trails Southern Wesleyan 289-293 in the 15-team men's field with Matt Emery and Hunter Vest tied for second individually at 71 and Tyler Smith sharing seventh at 72 with Taylor Davis, playing as an independent. Tennessee Wesleyan is 10th at 310 with Josh Wheeler tied for 13th at 73 and Zack Hester at 76. Bryan is 15th, led by Braden Baugh's 76. Lee's Lady Flames are at 313, 10 behind the hosts, with Courtney Shelton second at 74, Sloane Skinner tied for fifth at 77 and Madison Alexander, Chelsea Rakestraw and Bernadette Little also in the top 15 at 80, 82 and 83. Bryan is seventh at 369 with Audrey Nelson matching Little.
Volleyball
• Chelsea Van Dyk's 12 kills and Steph Kirkpatrick's 30 assists led the Covenant College volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-14 win over visiting Sewanee on Thursday. Each team is now 3-2. Jessica Chittenden and Cora Schroeder each had seven kills for the winning Lady Scots, who got 21 digs from Estes Carlson and 11 from Hannah Rogers. Jamie Sue Wilson had nine kills and 10 digs for Sewanee, while Rachel Schuman had 17 assists and two aces and Jamie Kosman made 14 digs.
• Shorter University pulled out a 20-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-23 volleyball victory Tuesday night at Bryan College as Jennifer Campbell and Anna Graham made 11 and 10 kills, Jasmine Crook added eight and Jordan Corder recorded 39 assists. Chelsea Breaden and Kaylan Dilts had 12 kills apiece and Breaden and Corrie Walker had 17 digs apiece for Bryan (6-5), which got nine kills and six block assists from Carolyn Evans, 36 assists from Taylor Fink and 11 digs from Rebecca Adams.
• The UTC volleyball team will play Troy and Tennessee State today and Kennesaw State and North Carolina Central on Saturday in Kennesaw's Owls Classic. The Mocs, who are 4-0 at home and 0-3 on the road so far this season, are 2-2 all-time against both Troy and KSU and 7-0 against TSU but never have played North Carolina Central.
Soccer
• As the UTC soccer team plays tonight at Gardner-Webb, Mocs senior Becca Smith from Murfreesboro is second in program history to Diana Jallo (2002-05) with 33 goals and 80 points after scoring goals last weekend at Lipscomb and Austin Peay. Jallo had 37 goals and 87 points as a Moc. Smith passed former teammate Donna-Kay Henry with her output last weekend.
• The Bryan College women's soccer team got its first win of the season Wednesday night, 2-1 at the University of the Cumberlands. Haley Julian scored from about 25 yards out in the 33rd minute, and Alex Kuh netted a 10-yard shot in the 72nd minute for the Lady Lions (1-3). Stephanie Gagnon made 12 saves.
