Suspect charged in police officer shooting
CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. - The man accused of shooting a Chickamauga police officer in the leg Thursday faces at least nine felony charges, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said.
Michael Anthony Brooks II, 24, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of theft and two counts of obstruction of a police officer, according to a news release.
He may also face additional charges in Catoosa County and Hamilton County, Wilson said in the release.
After shooting the officer in the leg Thursday, Brooks fled east in his Jeep. On Three Notch Road in Catoosa County, he stole a car from a woman who was taking her garbage out and continued to drive north in her vehicle.
Georgia officials pursued Brooks and eventually forced him to stop on Interstate 75 North, just over the Tennessee border. He was taken into custody and remains in the Hamilton County Jail on a $150,000 bond, Wilson said.
Volunteer day at Cleveland State
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - For anyone needing information about Cleveland's health and safety organizations, or wishing to become a volunteer, Cleveland State Community College's third annual Volunteer Expo is WednesdaySept from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium on campus.
The event is open to the public.
The theme is "Make a Difference Now," said Susan Webb-Curtis, the college's director of service Learning and cooperative education. Students, faculty and community can learn more about getting involved with a number of organizations, she said.
First West Nile case in 6 years reported
KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. - Knox County is reporting its first case of West Nile disease in six years.
WATE-TV reports the health department has been spraying around the county to try to kill the infected mosquitoes that spread the virus.
A mild case of West Nile can cause flu-like symptoms and a skin rash. But a severe case can cause convulsions, vision loss, numbness, paralysis, coma and even death. The symptoms can last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent.
According to Tennessee Department of Health statistics, 14 other cases of human West Nile infection have been reported across the state so far this year.
Man, teen girl arrested on drug charges
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - An Alabama man and a teenage woman were arrested Thursday night on drug charges, authorities said.
James Tyler Jones, 22, of Woodville, was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office. Whitney Paige Rollins, 18, of Woodville, was charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, the release said.
Both were taken to the Jackson County Jail where Rollins was released on a $1,000 bond while Jones remains in custody on an $8,000 bond, the release said.
On Thursday night, an officer in the sheriff's Narcotics Unit checked a vehicle parked beside a local business at Highway 79 and Highway 35 in Scottsboro, Ala., the release said. The officer found small amounts of marijuana, synthetic marijuana known as spice and methamphetamine, the release said.
