UTC claims 3 of 4 titles in PowerAde

Amanda Sumner led a one-two-three finish for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's cross country team in its season-opening PowerAde Invitational meet Friday at Moccasin Bend, and UTC's Nathan Wanuch won the men's 5-kilometer race although the Mocs finished second by six points to Middle Tennessee State. Wanuch won in 15 minutes, 31.72 seconds, and UTC freshman Paul Stuart was fourth in 16:02.65 with teammates John Gilpin, Trevor Janssen and Patrick O'Brien seventh, ninth and 11th. Robinson Simatei's second-place 15:48:58 led MTSU's five top-10 finishers. UT-Martin was third with Austin Peay fourth and Covenant fifth, led by Stephen Dillon and Stephen Harper in 25th and 26th places. Sumner's 11:38.02 in the two-mile race was nearly 20 seconds ahead of runner-up teammate Kathryn Stuart, with Keeley Stewart third. Mary Cumbee was 15th. Two members of the UTC program running unattached, twins Rachel and Rebecca Greenwall, were fifth and 14th. MTSU was second, followed by Peay and UTM. Covenant and Alabama A&M tied for fifth. Covenant's Beth Burgess and Esther Anderson were 16th and 23rd.

Soccer

• UTC sophomore Crystal Mackezyk's goal in the 13th minute Friday night held up for a 1-0 women's soccer victory at Gardner-Webb, giving the Mocs a 2-3-1 record. The scoring sequence began with a Hannah Wyatt corner kick into the box. Lauren Wilson's shot was blocked, but Wyatt was able to get the ball to Mackezyk out of the ensuing scramble. UTC freshman keeper Lauren Thomas made seven saves.

• Ode Fulutudilu's three goals in the first 48 minutes propelled the NAIA's top-ranked Lee University women's soccer team to a season-opening 6-1 whipping of Northwood at Embry-Riddle's Habit for Humanity Classic on Friday. Ashley Aragona scored at 52:10 and on a breakaway at 71:30, with Clair Lanter touching home a corner kick in between. Northwood (2-3) scored in the 82nd minute.

• Tennessee Wesleyan and Lee tied 2-2, each team netting its first two shots, in men's soccer Friday night in Cleveland. Pedro Alba scored from a Danny Smith and assisted on a Luke Winter goal for TWC (1-1-2). Sias Reyneke and Josh Ball headed in crosses from Sebastian Vallejo and Luke Cuthbert for Lee (3-1-1), which outshot the Bulldogs 20-11.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball team lost 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 to Troy and 25-19, 23-30, 25-22, 25-23 to Tennessee State at Kennesaw State's tournament Friday. Christina Teter and Julimar Alvarado downed 10 kills apiece and Sara Batterton had nine in the loss to Troy, when Bridget Camacho had 41 assists, Paula Passmore made 26 digs, Catherine Chason had 17 digs and Lauren Gainer contributed 16 digs with seven kills for UTC (4-5). Alvarado and Gainer had 12 and 10 kills and Teeter added eight against TSU, while Camacho had 35 assists and Passmore had 21 digs. Gainer had two solo blocks in each match and two and three block assists.

• Sixth-ranked Lee University lost 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 to No. 3 Columbia (Mo.) and 25-20, 25-21, 25-22 to No. 1 Brownsville on the first day of Lee's volleyball "Showcase." Irene Ojukwu and Marija Zelenovic had 18 and 15 kills, Camil Martinez had 44 assists and Libby Peigen had 19 digs against Columbia; Zelenovic and Paula Martins had 12 and 10 kills against the defending NAIA champions, when Nicole Sumida had eight kills and Martinez had 27 assists and 10 digs.

• Bryan College beat Mobile 25-11, 25-22, 25-21 and edged Southern Wesleyan 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12 at Faulkner's volleyball tournament Friday, as Chelsea Breaden had nine and 26 kills and Taylor Fink totaled 65 assists. Corrie Walker, Madison Akins and Fink had 29, 21 and 16 digs against SWU, when Maggie Brown and Makenzie Sindelar each made eight kills and Kaylan Dilts had seven.

Tennis

• UTC senior Chris Smith won three-set matches against players from Mercer and Georgia Tech in Flight 2 singles of the Southern Intercollegiate tennis tournament Friday at Athens, Ga. He prevailed 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) over Mercer's Joao Pagan and by the same score against the Yellow Jackets' Garrett Gordon and faces East Tennessee State's Rogerio Ribeiro at 8 this morning. "Chris has been getting better each time he has stepped on the court since we started practice," Mocs coach Carlos Garcia said. "He has worked hard, made a few adjustments, and it is nice to see his game coming together." In women's play at the Auburn Invitational, UTC freshman Kelsey Coots reached the finals of Flight 5 singles and sophomore Kaylene Chadwell and freshman Kayla Jones reached the Flight 1 doubles semifinals. Coots beat Georgia Southern's Caitlin Kitchen 6-2, 6-2 and downed Kennesaw State's Tess Lagerkvist 6-3, 6-3. Chadwell and Jones won 8-4 over Northwestern State's Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova.

Football

• After thrashing Puget Sound 30-7 last week, the Sewanee football team hosts longtime nonconference rival Washington & Lee today at 2 p.m. EDT as part of Hall of Fame Weekend. The Tigers last beat W&L in 2003 and trail 38-22 in the series, including a 31-14 loss last year at Lexington, Va. The Generals lost 35-28 last Saturday to Franklin & Marshall.

Golf

• Three-time champion Brent Sizemore of Calhoun is one of the 137 golfers playing today and Sunday in the Georgia Public Links Championship at Acworth's Cobblestone course. Sizemore is the only triple winner (1998, 1999, 207) of the annual event for amateurs who do not hold privileges at clubs that don't permit public play. Other area entrants are Scott Melton of Ringgold, Matthew Baker of LaFayette, Randy Bowman of Summerville, Virgil Waters of Calhoun and Tim Shubert of Blue Ridge.

• The Lee University women's golf team finished second out of eight teams and the Lee men were third out of 15 at the University of the Cumberlands' Bill Sergent Invitational on Friday, and unattached Flames freshman Tyler Davis closed with a 5-under-par 67 to tie for first individually at 139. Hunter Vest and Matt Emery tied for third for Lee at 142, and Tyler Smith shot 147. The Lady Flames' Courtney Shelton, Sloane Skinner and Madison Alexander were third, fifth and tied for sixth at 153, 157 and 158.

• Freshman Emily Javadi from Baylor School shot the best individual score in Sewanee women's golf history Friday, a fifth-place 79 at the Centre College Fall Invitational at Danville, Ky., and led the Tigers to a fifth-place finish and a team one-round record of 359. Sophomore Jenna King from Dallas, who had the previous individual standard of 81, was 13th with an 83.
