'Why is it OK to offend Christians?' and other letters to the editor

Why is it OK to offend Christians?

Some people are always trying to hinder the duty of Christians, which the Bible says is to teach the Gospel to all, as Jesus and his disciples did in a firm but gentle way.

Some want Christians to stop teaching the Gospel because it offends skeptics, atheists and others. Why is it wrong to offend everyone but Christians, those seeking salvation, or even Jesus or God?

JENNIFER BRADFORD

Thoughts on Obama have gotten better

In Mitt Romney's nomination acceptance speech, he said about President Obama, "You know there's something wrong with the kind of job he's done as president when the best feeling you had was the day you voted for him."

Well, Mr. Romney, my best feelings about President Obama progressively increased on the days when he prevented the second Great Depression; passed Wall Street reform; signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act; saved the automobile industry; ended the war in Iraq and started the draw-down of the war in Afghanistan; turned monthly job losses into job gains; ended "Don't ask, don't tell"; ordered the raid that resulted in the killing of Osama Bin Laden; prevented the deportation of immigrants brought as children into this country by their parents; stopped banks from profiting from student loans; signed the new GI Bill expanding benefits for veterans; expressed support for same-sex marriage; and especially when he signed the Affordable Care Act into law.

These accomplishments are especially remarkable considering that many Republican leaders stated that their primary goal was not to create jobs, improve health care, or help veterans, but rather to see Obama fail.

Presumably, the impact of that selfish goal on Americans was of no concern to such obstructionists.

LEWIS ADDISON

Handouts will drop along with economy

There are many folks planning to vote for Obama because they believe their handouts will continue with possible increases: Subsidized rent, food stamps, increased student loans, and so on. Regardless of Obama's promises -- if the economy fails any more, the handouts will be the first to be reduced or disappear altogether. This also goes for all special-interest groups, union, lifestyle, women, whomever -- if the economy bursts, your interests will be set aside. If you don't believe me, go to your local gas station and see what it now costs to fill your tank with Obamaline.

HERB WILKINS, Hixson

Republican team panders to rich

Republicans have the perfect ticket, two rich white men. Both are committed to lining the pockets of the rich while starving the poor and middle class.

Mitt Romney is a tax dodger and vulture capitalist who is willing to do anything to make a buck, regardless of the havoc it creates in the lives of working people.

Paul Ryan is a preppy geek who was elected "biggest brown-nose" by his private-school classmates. His ideological hero is Ayn Rand, an atheistic, pro-abortion, Russian novelist who worshiped the dollar. "Atlas Shrugged" is a work of fiction and John Galt is imaginary. Paul Ryan's inability to discriminate between fact and fiction is indicative of an adolescent fixation that afflicts many Republican ideologues.

Neither have any empathy for those who are hungry, homeless, in need of medical care, or looking to escape poverty by getting an education. Both were born to wealth and privilege and feel entitled to enrich themselves on other people's suffering. Both are proven liars.

Both espouse voodoo economics of "trickle down" and care only about pandering to the rich. In short, they are the quintessential Republicans.

No traffic makes city Dead Bank

I find it interesting that the city of Red Bank says that in the last seven years, since the installation of traffic cameras, there has been a 42 percent reduction in red-light running at the intersection of Ashland Terrace and Dayton Boulevard. Could this be attributed to a 50 percent decrease in traffic?

I moved to the Chattanooga area three years ago. When driving down Morrison Springs Road to Dayton Boulevard for the first time, I thought "what a pretty place." That's before I saw a closed-down shopping center on the north side of town and a major restaurant vacant across from the Red Bank Junior High School. These are just a couple of the many vacant stores and businesses in Red Bank. Now I've come to the conclusion that Red Bank should be called Dead Bank.

God is a power controlling destiny

Re: "Listen to God's Spirit within," letter (Sept. 1): Dietrich Bonheoffer was a devout Christian his entire life. He held to his faith and his convictions despite great danger from the Nazis.

The German church had been compromised by the Nazi party, but there was an active Christian Church in Germany ... the "Confessing Church," of which Bonheoffer was an active member.

The Confessing Church confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and opposed the Nazis. If Bonheoffer had played it safe, he probably would have survived the Nazis, but he did not.

Here are some other things that Dietrich Bonheoffer said, "Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act." "Religion today is far more committed to so-called 'tolerance' than to the Truth."

As to the Gnostics ... theirs is a dualistic religion that has nothing to do with the Christian Church. The Christian Church was founded by Jesus Christ. Religion, by definition, is simply a strong belief in a supernatural power or powers that control human destiny. I believe that this power is God.

Judge cameras on safety issues

Last year I called and talked personally with Mayor Millard concerning the advantages of keeping the traffic cameras in Red Bank. He was quite disinterested in my opinions.

Seventeen years ago, the corner of Dayton Boulevard and Ashland Terrace was a dangerous place. People ran the red lights many times a week. The traffic cameras went up and suddenly the problem all but disappeared.

Our family of six lives in Red Bank. Never once have any of us or all our children's friends gotten a ticket from the cameras. Apparently the drivers willing to risk lives are the ones who are bypassing our town or they have learned to drive like law-abiding citizens. Why should the people of Red Bank tolerate dangerous, willful drivers who would risk our lives with illegal driving habits?

The issue of the traffic cameras should be judged on safety issues, not money ones. A traffic ticket from a camera is much cheaper than the one a policeman would give.

I expect Mayor Millard to place policemen permanently on the corners if he succeeds in removing our safety cameras. Shame on the Red Bank leaders who are considering removing them!

Time for Christians to take a stand

Ever since I can remember, there was prayer offered at most if not all sporting events -- this even before I become a believer. It did not bother me at all. I just listened, and that was that. Now we have a small group who wants to take our rights of free speech, including prayer. away from us.

We as Christians have been silent too long. It is time for us to speak up for our rights. Why are we permitting a small group of people dictating to us where we can pray?

LEONARD WILLIAMS, Ooltewah

Some agendas aren't hidden

We are living in excruciatingly puzzling times. We are trying to figure out who both the contenders for president really are. There are a lot of hidden agendas to be delved into. "Obama's America," a documentary now in the theaters, is worth checking out.

One thing that is crucial: Where does Israel fit in with their plans for us? I know there is a God in heaven who will bless the U.S.A. if we will be a blessing to our only democracy in the Mideast. Countries that want to obliterate Israel also are our mortal enemies. Their agendas are not hidden.

I take great comfort in knowing what the Bible says in the book of James: "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord."

Jennifer, you are asking the wrong question. The question is, why should Christians be exempt from ridicule and offense when everyone else must just deal with it? Like us nonbelievers when we speak up for our rights. We are told to sit down and shut up because we are the minority. Well, sorry but things don't work like that in this country. All have an equal voice and equal rights here.

And Leonard, NO ONE IS TRYING TO TAKE AWAY YOUR RIGHTS TO PRAY. You can pray anytime, anywhere and as often as you wish! What us who are against these prayer issues are up in arms about is when a government or public school official gets up in front of a crowd and forces EVERYONE to listen and take part in these religion-specific prayers. You should only be okay with this situation if you would also allow a Muslim, Jew, Wiccan, etc. get up and pray after the Christian one has been offered. But in private, or in church, prayers are great. Go for it!

Lewis Addison succinctly summarizes the multiple reasons for re-electing President Obama.
Herb Wilkins, fyi, I receive none of the benefits you mention. I'm not even getting Medicare or Social Security. (I did get student loans long ago, and paid them all back.)
I will absolutely vote to re-elect President Obama, because he and Joe Biden have shown that they will keep this country stable for the middle class. Have they been perfect? No. But, they did inherit a colossal mess.
Romney & Ryan will destroy the middle class, while giving tax breaks to the ultra-rich.
Why aren't so-called patriots in the GOP concerned about what Romney is hiding in his tax returns? And, why is Romney so afraid to let Americans know the truth?

JENNIFER BRADFORD, You are at least honest enough to admit that the purpose of your public displays is to proselytize. And that you are offended when I say, "Get out of my face."

daytonsdarwin said...

Why do skeptics, agnostics and atheists oppose displays and proselytizing in public schools and government offices? I can't speak for all freethinkers but this is my position.

To encourage free minds, particularly young minds, to rail against dark age superstitions, religious ignorance, religious bigotry, and hope that continued light on the failed Biblical fairy-tales can be excised from science classrooms and government offices.

To open minds, not close them. To show organized religion as anathema to progress, and to offer liberation to those who desire to come forth from the 2000 year-old mental disease of immoral and murderous imaginary deities and the cruel results of those religious true believer's escapades.

With the internet and the ability to quickly research the Bible, gods, and other man-made religious creations, the slow but steady collapse of a literal God and inerrant Bible is occurring. As science reveals creationism as magical thinking and gods of every type as creations of ignorance and the power hungry, church attendance is steadily falling, particularly from fundamentalist churches.

The old Calvinist creeds are neanderthal, guilt-ridden viewpoints of religious fanatics, whose dogmas are life-condemning, not life affirming. They're the orthodox, dogmatic hate mongers of humanity who justify unspeakable barbarities in the name of a monster god, and prey on children with the hate-filled message of original sin, hell, and damnation.

That's my reason for opposing any religion in public schools and government offices. Freedom is not found in serving masters, particularly imaginary and anthropomorphic symbols of religious despotism.

There's more honesty and life in a two-year-old's smile and questions than all the Bibles and gods created by man.

Jennifer Bradford, your arrogance is unbelievable. But then it's only typical of the Christian mindset. The very core of your religion is not love but blind obedience to a demanding God and a self-righteous attitude that your way is the only way to believe. For all the preaching, proselytizing, and public praying you and yours do, your very attitude exemplifies what you're really all about, and that alone should deter any sane and sensible person from joining your cult of deluded, self-righteous twits. Oops...did I just offend you? Oh well, just chalk it up to being persecuted for Jeezus. I'm sure you'll be rewarded for it in heaven.

The Voices Who Have Darkened Counsel Without Knowledge Have Squealed Like Stuck Pigs, and like The Babies Being Slaughtered by the Pro-Choice Democratic Party Constituents. Now! Saint Matthew 5-Jesus Said...

"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

For if ye [only] love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?"

So, we who are His Children of Light do pray for You who blaspheme the Name of The One True Lord God of Hosts, but, now hear what He plainly speaks to You:

Saint Jude 1-"...But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness,

and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ... Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication,

and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities...But these speak evil of those things which they know not:

but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.

Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core...

clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame;

wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,To execute judgment upon all,

and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.

These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage...

But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts."

Why do you care whether someone else believes? I am very comfortable in my unbelief, thank you very much. Although how I got to where I am is complicated, a simple version is:

I can either believe in a deity that punishes unbelief and allows for a lot of hate, trauma, death, suffering and violence in the world (and therefore does not deserve worship), or I can refuse to think that any god would allow the world to be so brutal to so many of its creations, and therefore must not exist at all.

There you go. Sorry to not fit your stereotype of a liberal atheist, who I am sure you must think believes as they do so that they can live a wicked life without conscience. I actually don't lead a wicked life, nor do I lack a conscience.

As a Pastafarian, I am dismayed that my own deity, The Flying Spaghetti Monster, has not been included for the prayer lineup at the Hamilton County Commission nor cannot be taught in public schools. Even our Founding Fathers, including the illustrious Yankee Doodle Dandy recognized the miracles of macaroni.

Doth thou not realized the Flying Spaghetti Monster commands obedience to His Holy Semolina Scriptures, "Give us this day our daily pasta" and "Whosoever believes in me shall have everlasting Ragu and live forever in the land flowing with Parmesan and basil?" Carbonera 2:4 (King Oregano version)

"Woe be unto the disbelievers and rice eaters, for they know not the wonders of His Noodly Appendage, and seek not the ways of His Holy Colander." 1st Lasagna 5:7-9

Whosoever believeth in His Pasta and shall soak His only begotten Strands in a thick marinara, shall taste of His everlasting and never-ending Pasta Bowl at the Mount of Olive Garden. Breadsticks 3:16

"The path is wide and flat and called fettuccine; and no man enter the Kingdom of Boiling Water without first adding salt." Spaghetti-O's 4:18

It's time to come together in the spirit of love, compassion, and Alfredo sauce for His rich, buttery namesake. Can't we all just see the wonder of his Noodliness?

Lay down your burden of wicked potatoes and evil couscous and worship at the Plate of Pasta He hath prepared for you.

JIM SISK, that joke was being made 10-15 years before you moved here, and the reason that restaurant closed was because it was in an inadequate location. Freaky huh, something built a while ago isn't suitable today. But no, the traffic hasn't changed in volume. You can check that data yourself.

SYLVIA HILDEBRANDT, I'm sure the mayor will be quite responsible for what happens interms of aaccidents and injuries.

LEONARD WILLIAMS, the only case of a church being told where to pray that I know about was a guy operating a church out of his house in a residential neighborhood. That was not here, the case here is about the government endorsing a spe iufihc religioin. Why do Christians feel that a large group of them can dictate and impose their will on others simply based on their religious beliefs? Is it too much to ask for something moire persuasive than what you declare is the will of God?

Or do you support the option of allowing anybody local to pray before County Commission meetings as they wish? Or will you shut the door? Or do you think that you can dictate because you are in the majority?

RACHEL DECOSIMO, being without doubt is a sign of many things. Be wary of the perils of stubborn certainty.

Today UTC made the wise decision to stop public prayers at their football games.

I'm ready for the bible-thumpers to declare UTC as an instrument of Satan, the eminent fall of America, and Jesus weeping tears of blood while the Holy Spook goes bat-dung crazy and sends Chattanooga's children to hell for original sin.

I am still waiting for the TFP to interview the Muslims at the new Mosque on Gunbarrel and ask them real questions. The interview done a couple of weeks ago was ridiculous. What do they think of homosexuality ? What do they think of converting from Islam to Christianity ? What is their view of the Jewish people in Israel ?

Do we care? This is not a theocracy.

JonRoss is obviously a loving, compassionate Christian. Why don't you go out the the mosque and ask them yourself? Wear your clean, pointy-headed white sheet with the cross to welcome them to Thumperland.

Yes, fanatical Muslims are as dangerous as fanatical Christians and Jews.

Put on your pointy-head dunce cap, Rossy. It wasn't the answer you wanted, but it's the answer.

How's that "Kill a Muslim for Christ" thing working for you?

Nice comeback, Rossy. Time to change your pull-ups! Don't be getting your white sheet dirty. The other Klansmen will be laughing at you at the big rally for Jesus, Prayer, and PBR.

Any religious group that claims to have the TROOTH (TM) and insists on imposing it on everyone is a problem. Right now that is the fundy Christians. Tomorrow, if the fundy muslims do this, I'll complain about them just as loudly.

You have a better plan, JonRoss? Or are you one of those folks that think all americans should be christian or else?

Who cares? They are not trying to stop non-members from seeking full rights. I don't care what ANY religious group thinks about anything, unless they are trying to impose these on non-members.

What is the ProgDem/Marxist/Obamist "belief system" and how are you being made to believe? What is the god/goddess/deity you are being forced to pray to? What rights have you been denied as an American citizen? Was your church of choice padlocked? Are you under 24-hour watch by the feds?

Now don't go getting your white sheet in a wad, Rossy. But you do look good with crap on your head. It gives you that look of self-imposed martyrdom.

Why don't you go ask your questions at the mosque? I thought you were a brave little Christian soldier, or are you afraid?

I'm sure if Muslims had questions they would go to your kindergarten class and ask you.

The constitution does not protect medical care. Be specific. I suspect you can have any type of medical care you want, as long as you pay for it. Isn't that the republican way?

I'm sure Moccasin Bend will take you. They're full of religious nut-jobs so it will be just like a family reunion.

Hey Rossy! If Jesus could raise the dead, reckon he could give you a little brain matter? It wouldn't take much and then you could ride your trike to the Klan rally.

I'm sure that doesn't apply to you Rossy. Most mental cases like you are unable to work and pay taxes. Speaking of mills, are you the same guy that pulled those stunts in Rossville and went bankrupt? Poor baby.

But God loves you! That's the reason you're so happy!

If you don't want an abortion don't have one. I'd be willing to bet not a dime of your taxpayer money (if indeed you do pay taxes) ever paid for an abortion.

Poor Rossy. He doesn't have the guts to ask a Muslim a question. What's-a-matter Rossy? Don't feel safe unless you're running in a pack of eunuchs? Only come out at night to toss firebombs and burn crosses? Afraid of the big, bad Muslims who might laugh at you for your ignorance? Or jealous that they've built a mosque with their own money because they've been successful businessmen while you've been a financial flop?

You didn't answer the questions? Are you jealous because of those Muslims successes in business while you've been a financial flop in Rossvile with your mill escapades? Or are you afraid of science and reason? Do you handle snakes, writhe on the floor, drink strychnine, speak in tongues, and give money (not your own as you're broke) to Pat Robertson , John Hagee and Jimmy Swaggert?

Poor Rossy. An example of Christian in-breeding and stuck in the dark ages of his own little evil world.
