Lee coach Matt YeltonDAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tournament host Embry-Riddle ended the 21-game winning streak of the four-time defending NAIA champion women's soccer team with a 3-1 defeat of Lee University in the Habitat for Humanity Classic on Sunday. No. 1 Lee, which had beat No. 19 Northwood 6-1 on Friday, took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute Sunday on a goal by Caroline Scales, but Allison Schultz equalized in the 36th minute and the fifth-ranked Eagles added second-half scores by Valerie Obita and Kizzy Menez. "We got outplayed, outmuscled and outworked by a team that simply wanted it more than we did," Lee coach Matt Yelton said. His Lady Flames (1-1) rebounded from two early-season losses to high-ranked foes last year to win 20 straight game and an unprecedented fourth consecutive national title. They host Lindsey Wilson this Thursday night.
• FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Sewanee men's soccer team lost 5-3 Sunday to North Carolina Wesleyan in the Methodist Fall Classic. Samuel Edoung-Biyo gave Sewanee an early lead, and Ford Rushton and Ford Emerson scored to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead in the second half, but the Battling Bishops scored three unanswered goals to get the win.
• SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee fell to visiting Transylvania, 5-1, in women's soccer Sunday after edging Washington & Lee 1-0 on Bess Goodman's first-half goal from a Sam Hutton assist Saturday night. Meagan Poole made four saves against W&L. Olivia Glascoe scored the Tigers' only goal in Sunday's loss.
• Katelyn Newsome's rebound goal with 10 minutes left to play gave Covenant College a 1-0 women's soccer home win Saturday night against Pikeville. The Lady Scots (2-1-1) outshot the visitors 18-5 and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Hannah Bales made four saves in the shutout.
Golf
• ACWORTH, Ga. -- John Hopper of Eatonton won the Georgia Public Links golf championship Sunday at the Cobblestone course. Hopper shot 70 in both rounds to win the event, followed by Ringgold's Scott Melton and William Mitchell of Roswell in a tie for second place at 141. Three-time champion Brent Sizemore shot an 81 on Sunday to finish tied for 31st at 155.
Volleyball
• The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team wound up 1-3 in the Kennesaw State tournament this past weekend by losing 25-21, 12-25, 25-22, 25-11 to the host team and beating North Carolina Central 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 on Saturday. That was the first win away from home this season for the Mocs (5-6). Briana Reid and Lauren Gainer had 11 and nine kills and Bridget Camacho had 29 assists against KSU (7-3), while Paula Passmore had 17 digs and two aces. She had 21 digs and four aces against N.C. Central, when Christina Teter made 15 kills, Camacho had 25 assists and Sarah Batterton had two block solos and a block assist. Freshman Gainer was named to the all-tournament team.
Tennis
• The UTC women's tennis team was full of winners in Saturday matches at the Auburn Invitational. Sophomore Kaylene Chadwell and freshman Kayla Jones won a semifinal and lost 8-4 to an Auburn duo in the Flight 1 doubles final, and junior Alexa Flynn and sophomore Claire Mulyadi won the Flight 2 consolation bracket and finished fifth while senior Jenna Nurik and freshman Kelsey Coots in Flight 3 and freshmen Jovana Peckovsji and Allison Storie in Flight 4 also won consolation draws. Freshman Katie Polk in Flight 6 singles and Storie in Flight 8 finished third overall, and Chadwell in Flight 2 and Peckovsji in Flight 7 finished fourth. The UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic is set for Sept. 28-30 at the Champions Club.
Field Hockey
• Courtney Kuiper had a goal and an assist in the first 10:25 and Alexis Hebert scored two second-half goals as Centre began field hockey play in the new Southern Athletic Association with a 4-1 win Saturday at Sewanee. The host Tigers' Tilden Davis netted a tying goal from a Cameron Herndon assist 8:37 into the contest, but Erin Bacon scored two minutes later from Kuiper's feed to give the Colonels (1-2) a lead they would not relinquish. Ellie Barton had 10 saves for Sewanee (2-1, 0-1).
